Teenagers
who
have
been
exposed
to
secondhand
smoke
have
about
double
the
risk
of
hearing
loss
of
those
who
had
little
or
no
exposure,
say
researchers
from
the
New
York
University
School
of
Medicine.They
tested
more
than
1,500
teenagers
aged
12
to
19
for
blood
levels
of
cotinine,
a
byproduct
of
nicotine
that
forms
when
people
are
exposed
to
cigarette
smoke,
and
then
tested
their
ability
to
hear
high
,
medium,
and
lowfrequency
sounds.The
more
smoke
the
teens
had
been
exposed
to,
the
greater
their
risk
of
hearing
loss.
Those
with
the
highest
levels
of
exposure
had
nearly
three
times
the
risk
of
hearing
loss.Hearing
loss
was
especially
marked
in
the
mid
to
highfrequency
range,which
meansthe
adolescents
may
have
difficulty
understanding
human
speech.That
could
cause
problems
in
school,
where
kids
may
be
labeled
trouble
makers.Surprisingly,some
80
percent
of
these
kids
had
no
idea
that
they
had
hearing
loss.More
than
half
of
American
children
and
teenagers
are
exposed
to
secondhand
smoke
in
their
homes.
This
exposure
increases
children’s
risk
of
lung
cancer,
learning
disabilities,
heart
disease,
and
other
diseases.Scientists
suggest
that
parents
minimize
their
children’s

makes
you
grow?
While
rolling
many
ideas
around
in
my
head
to
write
this
piece,
I
narrowed
my
focus
a
bit
and
chose:
family
and
sense
of
purpose.
My
family
keeps
me
excited
to
be
alive
—beginning
the
day
with
a
morning
kiss
from
the
man
I
love.
He
is
there
to
listen
and
guide,
to
laugh
and
sigh,
to
explore
and
relax,
and
to
make
each
day
meaningful.
Together
we
have
three
delightful
children.
Even
though
they
caused
various
gray
hairs
over
the
years,
they
have
also
provided
love
and
laughter.
Friends
fall
into
the
family
category
as
well.
Although
they
are
not
cut
of
the
same
cloth,
they
are
part
of
the
same
quilt.
True
friends
are
often
as
giving
and
maybe
even
more
giving
as
family.
Even
though
our
friends
enter
our
life
later
than
our
family,
strong
relation
exists.
In
fact,
sometimes
friends
know
us
better
than
family.
The
second
drive
is
a
sense
of
purpose.
While
impossible
to
describe,
it
is
very
easy
to
picture
as
we
think
of
everything
of
value
that
touches
us.
A
purpose
may
be
a
happy
family,
home
life,
and
so
on.
Actually
in
most
cases
it
is
a
bination
of
all
these
as
they
affect
our
lives
deeply.
Purpose
is
new,
fresh,
exciting
and
always
changing.
You’re
taking
up
the
same
job
each
day
except
that
sometimes
you
are
challenged.
I
always
wanted
to
be
a
teacher,
for
example,
and
I
chose
junior
high
French.
However,
over
the
years
my
tasks
changed
so
that
I
had
various
chances
to
teach
K12
and
beyond
in
a
wide
range
of
subjects,
levels
and
school
districts.
I
remained
in
the
same
profession
for
more
than
40
years
but
never
in
the
same
setting.
28.
What
did
the
author
do
before
writing
this
article?
A.
She
chose
her
own
family
as
the
main
topic
for
writing.
B.
She
studied
many
families
in
detail
for
some
ideas.
C.
She
took
some
concerned
drives
into
consideration.
D.
She
had
a
quick
mind
in
writing.
29.
What’s
the
author’s
attitude
to
her
marriage?
A.
Curious.
B.
Puzzled.
C.
Sad.
D.
Satisfied.
30.
What
is
the
closest
meaning
of
the
underlined
sentences
in
Paragraph
3?
A.
Though
not
born
into
a
family,
friends
are
considered
life
mates.
B.
Friends
wear
different
clothes
but
sleep
on
the
same
bed.
C.
A
friend
in
need
is
a
friend
in
deed.
D.
Blood
is
thicker
than
water.31.
What
can
be
inferred
from
the
last
paragraph?
A.
Everyone
has
his
own
purpose.
B.
Purpose
needs
to
be
flexible.
C.
Teachers
must
be
knowledgeable.
D.
Teaching
is
very
difficult
in
America.DEvery
parent
wants
the
best
start
in
life
for
their
children
and
there
is
no
better
gift
to
give
our
children
than
teaching
them
to
learn
to
read.
However,
in
today’s
busy
lives
we
as
parents
cannot
always
spend
as
much
time
as
we
would
like
sharing
books
with
our
children.
Now
there
is
another
exciting
medium
to
get
kids
reading
eBooks.
These
are
not
meant
as
replacements
for
paper
books
but
another
way
to
expose
children
to
reading.
There
have
been
some
huge
leaps
forward
in
the
development
of
eBooks
for
children,
especially
those
that
have
been
designed
about
how
kids
learn
to
read.
Now
there
are
eBooks
that
read
children
the
stories
while
emphasizing
the
words
to
teach
children
about
fluency,
and
improve
sound
/
word
recognition.
These
eBooks
can
be
used
later
as
the
children
bee
independent
readers.
Without
having
to
wait
for
adult
intervention
(介入),
children
can
try
and
sound
out
a
word
while
they
are
reading,
but
if
they
get
stuck
they
can
hear
it
spoken
again
by
clicking
on
the
word.
Children
learn
by
repetition
and
we
all
know
how
kids
can
want
the
same
story
over
and
over
again!
So
they
can
listen
to
the
story
a
number
of
times
and
learn
the
associations
between
the
sounds
and
the
words.
There
is
also
a
prehension/
memory
quiz
to
make
sure
the
children
have
listened
and
understood
the
story.
And
you
do
not
need
a
special
or
expensive
reading
equipment.
They
can
be
downloaded
straight
to
your
PC.
As
a
parent
myself
I
know
how
much
the
kids
love
to
spend
time
on
the
puter.
Now
they
can
use
screen
time
in
an
enjoyable
and
educational
way.
Having
picture
books
that
really
e
to
life
with
animated
illustrations
is
just
magical.
Even
reluctant
(不情愿的)
readers
are
engaged.

I
were

On

,
“Lost

sight
like
this
in

is
not
a

occurrence.
It
was
obvious
the
man
was
in
a
44
situation.Whilewe
were

I
asked

My

didn’t
follow
my
attitude
so
he
46
to
ask,
“Can
we
get
him
a
gift
card?”
I
thought
about
it.
We
were
low
on
cash
ourselves,
but...
well,
sometimes
giving
from
our
“need”
instead
of
our
“

”
is
just
what
we
need
to
do!
We
talked
about
the
fact
that
we
might
have
to
48
some
of
the
things
we
were
going
to
buy
if
we
bought

“That’s

We’d
like

all

all
the

.
“Hurry

Let’s
get
out
there
to
give
him
what
we
bought
50
he
gets
too

and
leaves.”
We
quickly

with
the
items
he
could

at
the

and
a

the

of
my

we
also
53
a

and
then
54
to
the
end
of
the
parking
lot,
where
our
“friend”
was
holding
his
sign.
We
handed
him
the
coffee
and
the
bag
of
food.
He
55
and
thanked
us
with
watery
eyes.
When
I
handed
him
the
gift
card
and
said
he
could
use
it
for
whatever
his
family
might
need,
he

本文通過我們一家人為一位失業,但有一大家人需要撫養的乞討者提供幫助的事情,告訴我們幫助別人也就是幫助自己。
41.D
語境為:當我們一家人去超市的時候,看到了一位失業但還有一大家人需要撫養的乞討者。spot“發現;認出”,符合語境。42.C
此處指那位乞討者舉著一個牌子,上面寫著:“失業,一大家人需要撫養”,廣告牌、紙牌上寫著用read或say。
43.C
根據后文可知這類現象在我們這個區域是不常見的。
44.A
根據上文我看到了“Lost
my
job.
Family
to
Feed.”可知那位乞討者處于困難時期。
45.A
此處指我要求每位孩子都為那位乞討者買他可能喜歡的東西。appreciate“欣賞;喜歡”。
46.B
根據上文孩子不知道我的態度,所以問的問題不肯定,應該是猶豫地問父母。
47.C
結合語境可知我們也并不富裕,因此作者認為有時從我們所需要的而不是我們所富有的給予別人是我們需要做的事情,這里的選項abundance與上文的need對應。
48.D
孩子建議給他買一個禮品卡,而我們經濟也并不富裕,因此
