butyou'dbewrong.Decliningbirthrateisamajorprobleminmany

developingregionstoo,whichmightcausecatastrophicglobal

shortagesofworkforcewithinafewdecades.

instance.Whatdoesitimply?First,Chinaneedstoundergorapid

economicdevelopmentbeforeapopulationdeclinehitsthecountry.

Second,ifotherfactorssuchastechnologyremainconstant,economic

growthandmaterialexpectationswillfallwellbelowrecentstandards

andthiscouldinvitetrouble.

Russiaisanothercountrywithpopulationproblemsthatcould

breakitseconomicpromise.Since1992thenumberofpeopledyinghas

beenbiggerthanthatofthosebeingbornbyamassive50%.Indeed

officialfiguressuggestthecountryhasshrunkby5%since1993and

peopleinRussialiveashorterlifenowthanthosein1961.Whyisthis

occurring?Nobodyisquitesure,butpoordietandabovealllong-time

alcoholismhavemuchtodowithit.Ifcurrenttrendsdon'tbend,

Russia'spopulationwillbeaboutthesizeofYemen'sbytheyear2050.

InthenorthofIndia,thepopulationisboomingduetohighbirth

rates,butinthesouth,wheremosteconomicdevelopmentistaking

place,birthrateisfallingrapidly.Inafurthertwist,birthrateis

highestinpoorlyeducatedruralareasandlowestinhighlyeducated

urbanareas.Intotal,25%ofIndia'sworking-agepopulationhasno

education.In2030,asixthofthecountry'spotentialworkforcecould

betotallyuneducated.

immigration.AsfortheUSA,itisalmostuniqueamongdeveloped

nationsinhavingapopulationthatisexpectedtogrowby20%from

2010—2030.Moreover,theUSAhasatrackrecordofsuccessfully

acceptingimmigrants.Asaresultifslikelytoseeariseinthesizeofits

working-agepopulationandtowitnessstrongeconomicgrowthover

thelongerterm.
