TheshippingcontainerwasinventedandpatentedbyMalcolmMcLeanin1956.McLeanownedthelargesttruckingcompanyintheUSatthetime,andsawfirsthandhowinefficienttheprocessofloadingandunloadingcouldbe,withcargoshippedinwoodencasesthatcameinallshapesandsizes.Hisinnovationwasstandardizingthesizeofcontainers,whichmadethemidealforintermodal

transportontrucks,trains,andships.4

InApril1956,thefirstcommerciallyavailableshippingcontainermadeitswayfromNewarktoHouston.Tenyearslater,in1966,containershippingbecameavailableforinternationalroutes.ThentheVietnamWarjumpstarted

theprocess.5

Thewarcreatedaneedformassivevolumesofsuppliestobequicklytransported.Thiswaswhentheideaofshippingcontainersgainedtraction

andrecognitioninthemarketplace.Bytheendofthe1960s,McLeansoldhisempireforroughly$160million.Later,theInternationalMaritimeHallofFamevotedhimastheir“ManoftheCentury.”6

Itisnoexaggerationtosaythattheshippingcontainercreatedthemodernglobalsupplychain.In1980,containerscarriedabout102millionmetrictonsofgoods.In2017,thatnumberhadincreasedbya

factorof

eighteen,to1.83billionmetrictons.

BeforeMcLean’sinvention,freighttravelingbyseawasgenerallyloadedinindividuallycountedunits(i.e.fivebarrelsofwine,twentycasesofapples,etc.).Thiswasreferredtoasbreakbulkcargo.Itresultedinlengthycargomanifests

Sometimes,loadingandunloadingasingleshipcouldtakeuptoaweek.Sinceashiponlyearnsmoneywhileatsea,alotofpotentialrevenuewassquanderedwhiletheshipsatwaiting.

Today,aftertheburgeoningofglobaltrade,wecanseetheclearbenefitsoftheshippingcontainer:Ithasgreatlyreducedtheexpensesofinternationaltradeandshortenedshippingtime.Itprotectscargofromthievesanddamage,sincethecontainerislockedandsealedthroughoutthejourney.Itreduceslaborcostssinceitdoesnotrequirethelengthyloadingorunloadingofbreakbulkcargo.11
