tothewayinwhichwordsshouldbearrangedtoconveyaparticularmessage:theEnglishspeakerhasinhisdisposalavocabularyand

setofgrammaticalruleswhichenableshimtocommunicatehisthoughtsandfeelings,inavarietyofstyles,totheotherEnglishspeakers.Hisvocabulary,inparticular,boththatwhichheusesactivetlyandthatwhichherecognises,increasesinsizeashegrowsoldasaresultofeducationandexperience.But,whetherthelanguagestoreisrelativelysmallorlarge,thesystemremainsnomorethanapsychologicalrealityfortikeinpidual,unlesshehasameansofexpressingitintermsabletobeseenbyanothermemberofhislinguisticcommunity;hehastogivethesystema

concretetransmissionform.Wetakeitforgrantedtwomostcommonformsoftransmission-bymeansofsoundsproducedbyourvocalorgans(speech)orbyvisualsigns(writing).Andtheseare

andbusinessadministrationmajorstogetherconsisting8.7percentofundergraduatesandalmost12percentofundergraduatesdeclaredthemselveshistorymajors.ThenumberofEnglishmajorshasalsodecreased,from9percentin1969to5.5percenttoday.Degreesineconomicsaremarketedandlikelytogarnertheirholdersofhighsalarieswithouttheaddedeffortofmedicalorlawschool.Andgiventheobjectivesofcurrentcollegestudents,suchoptionsareattractive.1.in--onthebasisofonin

didtheircounterpartsinthe10countriessurveyed.Whileoftenpraisedbyforeignersforitsemphasisonthebasics.Japaneseeducationtendstostresstesttakingandmechaniclearning
