But,unlessliteraturegivessomethingmorethanpleasure,ithardlyjustifiesitselfasourstudysubject.Unlessitexpandsorrefinesourmindsorquickensoursenseoflife,itsvalueisnotappreciablygreaterthanthatofvideogames,bridgeorPing-Pong.Tohaveaconvincingclaimonourattention,itmustyieldnotonlyenjoymentbutunderstanding.
Theexperienceofhumankindthroughtheageisthatliteraturemaysupplysuchunderstandinganddosoeffectively---thatthedepictionofimaginedexperiencescanproviderealinsights.“Thetruesthistoryisfulloffalsehoods,andyourromanceisfulloftruth.”(SamuelRichardson)Butnotalltheliteraturemaypresentsuchinsights.Onlysomedoes.Therefore,literaturemaybefirstlyclassifiedintotwobroadcategories:literatureofescapeandliteratureofinterpretation.
Escapeliteratureisthatwrittenpurelyforentertainment---tohelpuspassthetimepleasantly.Ittakesusawayfromtherealworld:itenablesustemporarilytoforgetourtroubles.Itsonlyobjectispleasure.
Interpretiveliteratureiswrittentobroadenanddeepenandsharpenourawarenessoflife.Ittakesus,throughtheimagination,deeperintotheworld:itenablesustounderstandourtroubles.Itsobjectispleasureandunderstanding.
