airplaneswerebeingavoidedbymostpeople.
Onlyahandfulofbraveyoungmenflewthesenewplanes,andthere
wereveryfewwomenaviators.However,thatdidnotstopJacqueline.She
tookflyinglessonsandbegantoenterfamousraces.In1938,shewonfirst
prizeinacompetitiontoflyacrosstheUnitedStates.
AtthebeginningofWorldWarII,JacquelinetrainedwomeninEngland
aspilots.ShelatercamebacktotheUnitedStatesandtrainedAmerican
women,too.In1945.shereceivedtheDistinguishedServiceMedal,one
ofAmericashighesthonors.
Whenjetplaneswereinvented,Jacquelinelearnedtoflythem,too.
Soon,shewasthefirstwomantoflyfasterthanthespeedofsound.
Jacquelinealsosetmanyotherrecordsinthefieldofaviation,includingflying
higherthananyonehadbeforeher.
