fromthe1980sandcanintheorydamageamoderndrive,forwhichtheyareunnecessary.BIOSSystemBootOperationsOneofthemostimportantfunctionsthattheBIOSplaysistobootupthesystem.WhenthePCisfirstturnedon,itsmainsystemmemoryisempty,anditneedstofindinstructionsimmediatelytotellitwhattoruntostartupthePC.TheseitfindswithintheBIOSprogram,because

theBIOSisinread-onlypermanentmemory

andsoisalwaysavailableforuse,evenwhentherestofsystemmemoryisempty.ThissectiontakesalookatwhatisinvolvedinbootingthePC,includingadiscussionofthestepsinthesystembootprocess,andalookatthepower-onself-test(POST)thatisconductedwheneverthesystemstartsup.SystemBootSequenceThesystemBIOSiswhatstartsthecomputerrunningwhenyouturniton.Thefollowingarethestepsthatatypicalbootsequenceinvolves.Ofcoursethiswillvarybythemanufacturerofyourhardware,BIOS,etc.,andespeciallybywhatperipheralsyouhaveinthePC.Hereiswhatgenerallyhappenswhenyouturnonyoursystempower:Theinternalpowersupplyturnsonandinitializes.Thepowersupplytakessometimeuntilitcangeneratereliablepowerfortherestofthecomputer,andhavingitturnonprematurelycouldpotentiallyleadtodamage.Therefore,thechipsetwillgeneratearesetsignaltotheprocessor(thesameasifyouheldtheresetbuttondownforawhileonyourcase)untilitreceivesthe

PowerGoodsignal

fromthepowersupply.Whentheresetbuttonisreleased,theprocessorwillbereadytostartexecuting.Whentheprocessorfirststartsup,itissufferingfromamnesia;thereisnothingatallinthememorytoexecute.Ofcourseprocessormakersknowthiswillhappen,sotheypre-programtheprocessortoalwayslookatthesameplaceinthesystemBIOSROMforthestartoftheBIOSbootprogram.ThisisnormallylocationFFFF0h,rightattheendofthesystemmemory.TheyputittheresothatthesizeoftheROMcanbechangedwithoutcreatingcompatibilityproblems.TheBIOSperformsthe

power-onselftest(POST).Ifthereareanyfatalerrors,thebootprocessstops.

TheBIOSlooksforthevideocard.Inparticular,itlooksforthevideocard'sbuiltinBIOSprogramandrunsit.Mostmoderncardswilldisplayinformationonthescreenaboutthevideocard.(ThisiswhyonamodernPCyouusuallyseesomethingonthescreenaboutthevideocardbeforeyouseethemessagesfromthesystemBIOSitself).TheBIOSthenlooksforotherdevices'ROMstoseeifanyofthemhaveBIOSes.Normally,theIDE/ATAharddiskBIOSwillbefoundatC8000handexecuted.IfanyotherdeviceBIOSesarefound,theyareexecutedaswell.TheBIOSdisplaysits

startupscreen.TheBIOSdoesmoretestsonthesystem,includingthememorycount-uptestwhichyouseeonthescreen.TheBIOSwillgenerallydisplayatexterrormessageonthescreenifitencountersanerroratthispoint.TheBIOSperformsa"systeminventory"ofsorts,doingmoreteststodeterminewhatsortofhardwareisinthesystem.ModernBIOSeshavemanyautomaticsettingsandwilldeterminememorytiming(forexample)basedonwhatkindofmemoryitfinds.ManyBIOSescanalsodynamicallysetharddriveparametersandaccessmodes,andwilldeterminetheseatroughlythistime.Somewilldisplayamessageonthescreenforeachdrivetheydetectandconfigurethisway.TheBIOSwillalsonowsearchforandlabel

logicaldevices(COMandLPTports).IftheBIOSsupportsthePlugandPlaystandard,itwilldetectandconfigurePlugandPlaydevicesatthistimeanddisplayamessageonthescreenforeachoneitfinds.

Havingidentifieditstargetbootdrive,theBIOSlooksforbootinformationtostarttheoperatingsystembootprocess.Ifitissearchingaharddisk,itlooksfora
