InAugustof1971followinghisserviceinthemilitary,SmithboughtcontrollinginterestinArkansasAviationSales,locatedinLittleRock,Ark.Whileoperatinghisnewfirm,Smithidentifiedthetremendousdifficultyingettingpackagesandotherairfreightdeliveredwithinonetotwodays.Thisdilemmamotivatedhimtodothenecessaryresearchforresolvingtheinefficientdistributionsystem.Thus,theideaforFederalExpresswasborn:acompanythatrevolutionizedglobalbusinesspracticesandnowdefinesspeedandreliability.

FederalExpresswasso-namedduetothepatrioticmeaningassociatedwiththeword"Federal,"whichsuggestedaninterestinnationwideeconomicactivity.Atthattime,SmithhopedtoobtainacontractwiththeFederalReserveBankand,althoughtheproposalwasdenied,hebelievedthenamewasaparticularlygoodoneforattractingpublicattentionandmaintainingnamerecognition.

ThecompanyincorporatedinJune1971andofficiallybeganoperationsonApril17,1973,withthelaunchof14smallaircraftfromMemphisInternationalAirport.Onthatnight,FederalExpressdelivered186packagesto25UScitiesfromRochester,NY,Miami,Fla.

Today,thereareanestimated30millioninternallydisplacedpeopleintheworlddoublethenumberofrefugees.Inmanyplaces,theyareallbutforgottenbytheinternationalcommunity.

AlthoughtherearefewrefugeesinLatinAmerica,thereareupto3millioninternallydisplacedpersonsintheregion,includingasmanyas480,000inPeruand600,000inColombia.Inbothcountries,acombinationofpoliticalandsocio-economicfactors,suchasexcessivelyunequalincomedistribution,drug-traffickingandheavyinvolvementofthearmyinthepoliticalscene,haveresultedinhighlevelsofviolenceandaclimatethatfostershumanrightsabuses.Whethermanifestedasanongoingconflictbetweenthearmedforcesandthearmedopposition(thecaseofPeru),oraconstantarmedstrugglebetweenrebelandparamilitarygroups(thecaseOfColumbia),violencehascausedthedisplacementofhundredsofthousandsofruralpeasantsandnativepeople.Theinternallydisplacedoftenleadaverystableexistence,andtheyarehighlygratefulforanyonewhopaysattentiontotheirplight(averybadsituationthatsomeoneisin).
