追根溯源，感恩節是和美洲古代的印第安人，特別是和玉米的種植有十分密切的關系。1620年9月6日，一批英國清教徒難以忍受宗教的迫害，搭乘“五月花號

”木船駛往美洲。他們在疲勞、饑餓、寒冷和疾病的襲擊下在大西洋上漂泊了65天，最后到達北美殖民地的普利茅斯。

在第一個冬天，半數人以上都死于饑餓和傳染病，活下來的人們在第一個春季開始播種，整個夏天他們都熱切地盼望著豐收的到來他們深知自己的生存將取決于即將到來的收成。后來，莊稼獲得了豐收，所以大家決定要選一個日子來感謝上帝的恩典。直至1863年，美國總統林肯宣布把感恩節定為全國性的節日。
