DuringtheTangDynasty(618-907),manypopularpoemswerewritteninpraiseoftheYellowCraneTower.ItwasthesepoemsthatmadetheTowersorenownedandinducedforpeopletovisit.Duringthefollowingcenturies,itwasdestroyedandrebuiltseveraltimes.DuringtheMing(1368-1644)andQing(1644-1911)Dynastiesalonethetowerwasdestroyedseventimesandrebuiltseventimes.In1884,itwascompletelydestroyedinafireandwasnotrebuiltuntil1981.
Thetowerhaddifferentarchitecturalfeaturesindifferentdynasties.However,thetowerwhichstandstodayisbasedontheonedesignedduringtheQingDynasty.Itstands51.4meters(about168feet)highandhasfivefloors.Theappearanceofthetoweristhesameregardlessofthedirectionitisviewedfrom.Theroofiscoveredby100,000yellowglazedtiles.Withyellowupturnedeaves,eachfloorseemstohavebeendesignedtoresembleayellowcranespreadingitswingstofly.
Aroundthemaintowertherearemanyotherbuildings,includingtheShengXiangPagodaandthetemplegate.Eachstoreyisdecoratedwithtraditionalupturnedeaves,buteachonehasadifferentstyle.Thegroundfloorisatall,widehall.Themidmostcaissonceilingstandsover10metershigh.Onthefrontwallisahugeceramicmuralpaintingofawhitecloudandayellowcrane.Apairof7-meter-longinscribedtabletshangonthepostsonbothsides.ThefrontwallofthesecondfloorholdsamarbleinscriptionofTangDynastypoetYanBaojin’s‘NoteontheYellowCraneTower’.Oneachsideofitaremuralpaintings.Oneis‘TheTownthatSunQuanBuilt’.ItdescribesthehistoryoftheYellowCraneTowerandWuchangtown.Theotheris‘ZhouYuMadeaFeast’,whichtellsthestoryoftheThreeKingdomscelebrity’svisittothetower.Throughouthistory,poets,writersandartistshavetravelledtothetowerforinspiration,includingCuiHao,LiBai,BaiJuyi,YangShenandZhangJuzheng.C
