Wedecidedtocreateagroupstickingtopushingfor“greener“waystooperate,invitingresearchersinother
laboratoriesatourinstitutionaswellasourown.Overthefollowingmonths,welaunchedaseriesofinitiativesthat
wefeelhavemadeadifference.Weintroducednewrecyclingbinstoeachlaboratory,designedwaystoreduceouruse
ofplasticitemsandpurchasedmeterstotracktheenergyconsumptionofvariouspiecesoflaboratoryequipment.That
helpeduscreaterulesforeachdevice,whichweoutlinedonstickers:4tTummeoffattheendoftheday,“"Neverturn
meoff7'or"Turnmeoffifemptyornotinuse.^^Wealsoincreasedthetemperatureofseverallow-temperature
freezersafterrealizingsomesamplesdidn,thavetobestoredsocold.
I'mstilldisappointedthatIwasnotabletofullyrealizemy3D-printingvision,andIamcommittedenoughto
keeptrying.ButFvealsolearnedthatifoneapproachisn'tworking,sometimesifsbesttotakeastepbackandlook
forothersolutions.I'mthankfulthatwiththehelpoftheacademiccommunityaroundme,wewereabletodothat.

goesbackmorethansixdecades,whenthecommunitygatheringspotforseniorsopenedin1962.
Aboutayearandahalfago,adozenregularssteppedthingsupandcompleteda5,000-pieceDisneypuzzle,
whichiswhenseniorcenterdirectorToriEatondecidedtobuythebiggestpuzzle-a60,000-piecepuzzlecalled
“WhataWonderfulWorld",andimmediatelysheorderedit.Overthenextfourmonths,about50seniorsspentfour
hoursadaypiecingtogether60different1,000-piecepuzzlesectionsfeaturingaworldmapand187imagesof
artwork.Afterthe60puzzleswerecombinedintoonepieceofartspreadacross16tables,theseniorcenterputiton
displayforthepublic.
Numerousstudieshaveshownthatpuzzle-buildinghelpswithmentalhealth,particularlyinseniors,accordingto
theNationalInstitutesofHealth.Bendingoveratablefor300hourshelpedtobuildasenseofachievementand
everyonefeltenormousprideinfinishingit,Eatonsaid."Anothergreatthingwasthatwecangetpeopleoutoftheir
housestoenjoysomefuncompanionship.Lonelinessisaterriblethingforolderpeople.Gettingtogethertoworkfor
