Itwasoncebelievedthatthelimitsofone'slanguagedefinedthelimitsofone'sthought.Thistheory,

calledtheSapir-Wharfhypothesis(假說)，hasbeenlargelyrejectedinfavoroftheimprovedversion,

whichassumesthatthelanguagewespeakdoesnotsetthelimitsofourthoughts,butitdoesdirectour

focusincertainways.Forexample,Englishisatense-basedlanguage.It'snearlyimpossibletotalkabout
