calledtheSapir-Wharfhypothesis(假說),hasbeenlargelyrejectedinfavoroftheimprovedversion,

whichassumesthatthelanguagewespeakdoesnotsetthelimitsofourthoughts,butitdoesdirectour

focusincertainways.Forexample,Englishisatense-basedlanguage.It'snearlyimpossibletotalkabout

doingsomethingwithoutspecifyingthetime—i.e.Iwenttotheparty(past),I'mgoingtotheparty

(present),orI'llgototheparty(future).ThisdiffersfromChinese,whereit'sperfectlyreasonabletosay,

“Igototheparty“withoutdefiningthe"when”.Thus,partoftherichnessoflanguageisthatitallowsus

toorganizetheworldinsomanyuniqueways.

Somelanguagescategorizetheworldinwayssodifferentfromourownthattheyaredifficultto

conceptualize(概念化).TheUnitedStatesemployednativeNavajospeakerstocreateasystemofmessage

codingduringtheSecondWorldWar.TheJapanesewereneverabletobreakit,andthe“codetalkers95are
