InternationalGeneralofSecondaryMARKSCHEMEfortheMay/June201305470547Paper1(FOREIGNumrawmarkThismarkschemeispublishedasanaidtoteachersandcandidates,toindicatetherequirementsoftheexamination.ItshowsthebasisonwhichExaminerswereinstructedtoawardmarks.ItdoesnotindicatethedetailsofthediscussionsthattookceatanExaminers’meetingbeforemarkingbegan,whichwouldhaveconsideredtheacceptabilityofalternativeanswers.MarkschemesshouldbereadinconjunctionwiththequestionpaperandthePrincipalExaminerReportforTeachers.CambridgeispublishingthemarkschemesfortheMay/June2013seriesformostIGCSE,GCEAdvancedLevelandAdvancedSubsidiaryLevelcomponentsandsomeOrdinaryLevelcomponents.GeneralMarkingPleasenotethatitisnotpossibletolistallacceptablealternativesintheDetailedMarkSchemeprovidedinSection2.Youwillneedtoconsiderallalternativeanswersandunexpectedapproachesincandidates'scripts,makeadecisiononwhethertheycommunicatetherequiredelements,inconsultationwithyourPrincipalExaminerifnecessary(orwithyourProductManagerifyouareasingleExaminer),andawardmarksaccordingly.ThefollowingmarkingprinciplesunderpinthedetailedinstructionsprovidedinSection2oftheMarkScheme.Whereadecisionistakentodeviatefromtheseprinciplesforaparticularquestion,thiswillbespecifiedintheMarkScheme.Oftenthegeneralprincipleswillhavetobeweighedupagainsteachother,e.g.theanswermightpassthelook-aliketest(1.5(b)),butifthecandidatehasproducedananswerthatisanotherwordintheywillnotscore(1.6).Ifacandidatechangeshis/hermindoverananswerandcrossesoutanattempt,awardamarkifthefinalattemptiscorrect.Ifacandidatecrossesoutananswertoawholequestionbutmakesnosecondattemptatit,markthecrossedoutwork.Ifmorethanoneattemptisvisible,butthecandidatehasclearlyindicatedwhichattemptishis/herfinalanswer(e.g.bycrossingoutotherattemptsorbyannotatingthescriptinsomeway),markintheusualway.Iftwoattemptsarevisible(e.g.twoboxestickedinsteadofthe1boxstipulated),andneitherhasbeencrossedout/discountedbythecandidate,nomarkcanbeawarded.Inquestionswherecandidatesarerequiredtotickanumberofboxes(e.g.tickthe6truestatements)thegeneralruletobeappliedisasfollows:thenumberof'extra'answersindicatedbythecandidateisdeductedfromtheirnumberofcorrectanswersandtheremainingnumberisthemarkawarded,e.g.thecandidateisrequiredtotick6truestatements,butinsteadticks8statements.5oftheticksarecorrectlyced,but2oftheticksare'extras'(8tickscedbycandidateminus6ticksrequiredbyrubric=2).Thereforethecandidateisawardedamarkof3 –2minusnumberofextra=Answersinpendonottakeprecedenceoveranswersinpencil,e.g.ifacandidateisaskedtotick1boxandtickstwo,oneinpenandtheotherinpencil,themarkcannotbeawardedunlessthereissomeexplicitindicationfromthecandidateastowhichishis/herfinalanswer.Forquestionsrequiringmorethanoneelementfortheanswer,(i)and(ii),wheretheanswersareinterchangeable:Bothcorrectanswersonline1andline2blank=2Bothcorrectanswersonline1andline2wrong=1(orvice-versa)Answersrequiringtheuseof(ratherthananon-verbalresponse)shouldbemarkedforcommunication.Tolerateinaccuraciesprovidedthemessageisclear.‘Ifindoubt,sounditout’:ifyoureadwhatthecandidatehaswritten,doesitsoundlikecorrectLook-aliketest:doeswhatthecandidatehaswrittenlooklikethecorrectAcceptincorrectgender unlessMarkSchemespecifiesAcceptincorrectpossessiveadjectives,unlessMarkSchemespecifiesAcceptincorrecttenseunlessMarkSchemespecifiesUnlesstheMarkSchemespecifiesotherwise,donotacceptincorrectifthewordgivenmeanssomethingelsein.(Incorrectwhichconstitutesawordinanylanguageotherthanismarked(i)onthebasisofwhetheritisacceptedorrefusedintheMarkSchemeand(ii)ifnotmentionedintheMarkScheme,onthebasisof1.5above).Wherewordsarecombinedorsplitinappropriaydonotawardthemark,(inappropriateAnnotationusedintheMarkINV=Invalidationandisusedwhenadditionalmaterialincludedbythecandidateisjudgedtoinvalidateanotherwisecorrectanswerthuspreventingthemfromscoringthemark(INV=tc=‘toutcourt’andmeansthatonitsownthematerialisnotsufficienttoscoretheHA=harmlessadditionalmaterialwhichinconjunctionwiththecorrectanswerdoesnotpreventthecandidatefromscoringthemark.BOD=BenefitoftheDoubtandisusedtoindicatematerialconsideredbytheExaminerandjudgedtobemorecorrectthanincorrect:thebenefitofthedoubtisgiventothecandidateandthemarkisawarded.Noresponseand'0'marksAwardNR(NoResponse):Ifthereisnothingwrittenatallintheanswerspace,Ifthereisonlyacommentwhichdoesnotinanywayrelatetothequestionbeingasked'can’tdo'or'don’tknow')Ifthereisonlyamarkwhichisn’tanattemptatthequestion(e.g.adash,aquestionAwardIfthereisanyattemptthatearnsnocredit.Thiscould,forexample,includethecandidatecopyingallorsomeofthequestion,oranyworkingthatdoesnotearnanymarks,whethercrossedoutornot.ExtraItisthecandidate’sresponsibilitytoanswerquestionsinsuchawayastodemonstratetotheExaminerthats/hehasunderstoodtherecordedmaterial.Wherecandidatesintroduceextra,irrelevantmaterialtoanotherwisecorrectanswerthedangeristhattheExaminerisbeingdto‘choose’thecorrectanswerands/hecannotbecertainthatthecandidatehasshownunderstanding.WheretheExaminerisputinthispositionthemarkcannotbeawarded.TheDetailedMarkSchemecannotcoveralleventualitiesandwherespecificinstructionsarenotprovided,Examinersmustcheckthetranscripttoensurethecorrectelementswhichwouldqualifyforthemarkarenotcontradictedordistortedbyanyextramaterial.Thegeneral,rulesshouldbeExtramaterial,mentionedintheMarkScheme,whichreinsthecorrectanswerorinitselfconstitutesanalternativecorrectanswer:thisisacceptableandisnotExtramaterialwhichconstitutesanalternativeanswer,butwhichisnotexplicitlymentionedintheMarkScheme:theExaminerneedstodecide,byconsultingthetranscriptandthePEifnecessary,whetherthealternativeanswerconstitutes:analternativecorrectanswer,inwhichcasethisfallsintocategory(a)andtheanswershouldberewardedorananswerwhichonitsownwouldberefused,inwhichcasethisfallsintocategory(c)andtheanswershouldbeExtramaterialwhichconstitutesanalternativeanswerspecificallyrefusedintheMarkthisputstheExaminerinthepositionofhavingto‘choose’whichisthecandidate's'final'answer–theExaminercannotbesurewhatthecandidatehasunderstood–andthemarkcannotbeExtramaterialwhichdistortsorcontradictsthecorrectanswer:thisaffectscommunication–theExaminercannotbesurewhatthecandidatehasunderstood–andthemarkcannotbeawardedExtramaterialintroducedbythecandidateandwhichdoesnotfeatureintheoriginaltranscript:thisaffectscommunication–theExaminercannotbesurewhatthecandidatehasunderstood–andthemarkcannotbeawarded.Itcansometimesbedifficulttodrawthelinebetweenwhatisadeductionmadebyanablecandidateonthebasisofwhattheyhaveheardandpureguesswork.ThereforewhereaparticularanswerisnotcoveredintheMarkScheme,ExaminersshouldconsulttheirTeamLeaderDetailedMarkSection
