PAGEPAGE1英語口語中的中介語石化現(xiàn)象研究IntroductionCode-switching,referringtotheprocessofmovingbetweentwoormorelanguagesorlanguagevarietiesinasingleconversationorutterance,isacommonphenomenoninmultilingualsocieties.Code-switchingisprevalentinbilingualandmultilingualcommunities.Itcanalsohappeninmonolingualsocieties,wherespeakersmixdialects,sociolects,orregisters.Therearedifferentreasonswhyspeakerscode-switch.Theseincludeexpressingidentity,facilitatingcommunication,ormarkingsocialorstylisticdistinctions.Code-switchingalsohasdifferentforms,includinginsertion,alternation,congruentlexicalization,andfixation.Whenaspeakerswitchesfromonelanguagetoanother,athirdlanguageorlanguagevarietycanactasanintermediarybetweenthetwocodes.Thisphenomenoniscalledcode-mixingormetalinguisticmediation,alsoreferredtoasintermediatelanguage,interlanguage,orinterlingualtransition.Inthispaper,wefocusontheuseofintermediatelanguageinEnglishlanguageconversationsamongspeakersofotherlanguages,withafocusonthepetrochemicalindustry.BackgroundEnglishisaninternationallanguagewidelyspokenasasecondlanguageinmanycountries.Itisalsothelanguageofbusinessandcommerce,scienceandtechnology,aswellasinternationaldiplomacy.Assuch,manynon-nativespeakersuseEnglishinprofessionalsettings,especiallyininternationalcompaniesandindustries.Onesuchindustryisthepetrochemicalindustry,whichinvolvestheproductionandprocessingofcrudeoilandnaturalgasintoavarietyofchemicalsandproductsusedinindustriessuchasplastics,textiles,anddetergents.Thepetrochemicalindustryisahighlyspecializedindustrythatrequirespreciseknowledgeofchemicalprocessesandequipment.Giventhemultinationalnatureoftheindustry,differentlanguagesandculturesareoftenrepresentedintheworkplace.Thiscreatesaneedforeffectivecommunicationamongpeoplewhospeakdifferentlanguages.Insuchsettings,intermediatelanguagemaybeusedtofacilitatecommunication.IntermediateLanguageinthePetrochemicalIndustryIntermediatelanguageoccurswhenspeakersuseathirdlanguagetocommunicatewitheachother.Inthepetrochemicalindustry,intermediatelanguagecanbeusedwhenworkersfromdifferentcountriescommunicatewitheachother.Forinstance,aChineseworkermayspeakChinesewithaMexicanworkerwhospeaksSpanish.TheintermediatelanguageinsuchasituationmaybeEnglish,whichbothworkersmayusetocommunicatewitheachother.Intermediatelanguagecanalsobeusedtofacilitatecommunicationbetweenspeakersofthesamelanguagebutdifferentdialectsorlanguages.Forexample,aworkerfromIndiawhospeaksHindimayuseEnglishtocommunicatewithaworkerfromPakistanwhospeaksUrdu.Intermediatelanguagecantakedifferentforms.The
