ButinmanywaysthatissimilartowhatI’mtalkingabouttoday,thatis,introducingChinesepopmusic.See,I’mactuallyanambassadorforChinesepop,whetherIlikeitornot,forbothmusicandmovies,andtodayI’mheretogiveyouaStateofUnionaddress.It’snottheOxfordUnion,it’stheunionofEastandWest.

Iwanttofranklyandopenlyandhonestlytalkabouthowwe’vedoneagoodjob,orhowwe’vedoneabadjob,ofbringingChinesepoptotheWest.AndIalsowanttoimpressuponallofyouheretodaytheworkingsofthatsoftpowerexchangeandhoweachofusisinvolvedinthatexchange.

Softpower,atermI’msureyou’reallfamiliarwith,coinedbyRhodesScholarandOxfordalumnusJosephNye,isdefinedastheabilitytoattractandpersuade.ShashiTharoorcalledit,inarecentTEDTalk,“theabilityofaculturetotellacompellingstoryandinfluenceotherstofallinlovewiththem”.Ilikethatdefinition.ButIwanttoputitincollegiatetermforyoustudentsintheaudience.ThewayIseeit,EastandWest,arekindalikefreshmenroommates.Youdon’tknowalotabouteachotherasidethatyou’relivingwitheachotherinthesameroom.Andeachoneisscaredtheother’sgonnastealhisshowertimeorwantstopartywhentheotherwantstostudy.Ithasthepotentialtobeabsolutehell.Weallhavehorrorstoriesofthatroommate,weallheardaboutthosestories.IknowalotofstudentshereinOxfordhavetheirownseparatebedrooms.

ButwhenIwasafreshmanatWilliamsCollege[crowdinterjects]You’rekidding!Woohoo!WellIhadaroommate.Andhewasthatroommate.Let’sjustcallhimFrank.SoFrankwasmyroommateandFranklikednothingmorethantosmokeweed.[laughter]Andhediditeveryday.AndFrankhada2-footlongbongunderhisbedthatwasconstantlybeingfiredup.ForthoseChinesespeakersintheaudience,Frankwould火力全開onthatbong.SoIguessIwaskindatheoppositeofBillClinton,whotriedmarijuanabutdidn’tinhale:Ididn’ttrymarijuanabutIdidinhale.Everysingleday.Secondhand.Andstrangelyenough,everytimeIgointoourbedroom,Imysteriouslyendupbeinglateforclass.Iwaslike,dudeisitalready10o’clock

So,howmanyofyouhavelivedwiththatFrank,orbeaFrankHavingaroommatecanbearecipefordisaster,butitalsocanhavethepotentialofbeingthegreatestfriendshipyou’veeverhad.See,Frank,hedidn’tmakeittosecondyear.AndIgottwonewroommatesinstead:StephanandJason,andthesedaysthethreeofusarethebestoffriends.Sogoingbacktomyanalogy,EastandWest,asroommates,dowewanttobeFrank,ordowewanttobeStephandJason,andIthinkinthisdayandage,in2013,weshouldallbestrivingforthelatter.I’massumingweallagreethatthisisthegoalthatweallstrivefor.

Now,let’slookatwhereweareinreality,inrecentheadlines,inthemediainclude,Foreignpolicy[maybe],China’svictimcomplex,WhyareChineseleaderssoparanoidabouttheUnitedStatesorthe[AP,theAssociatedPress],HumanrightsinChinaworsethanUS.Bloombergsays,onthecoverofthismagazine,Yes,theChinesearmyisspyingonyou[laughter]Andit’ssuchagreatonethatIwanttoshowyouthecoverofthemagazine[laughter][Ed:checkoutthephotoontheright!]Yes,beveryafraid![laughter]

There’sactuallyanextremelyhighamountofnegativityandfearandanxietyaboutChina,Sinophobia,thatIthinkisnotjustmisinformedandmisleadingandultimatelydangerous.Verydangerous.AndwhatabouthowWesternersareviewedbyChineseWell,wehavetermsforWesterners.Themostcommonofwhicharegwailo,inCantonesewhichmeans“theolddevil”,laowai,meaning“theoldoutsider”inMandarin,angmoh,whichmeans“theredhairyone”inTaiwanese,andthelistgoesonandon.SoaretheseroommatesheadingforabestfriendrelationshipIthinkweneedalittlehelp.AndasChinarisetopower,Ithinkitismoreimportantthaneverforustomorediscerningaboutwhatwebelievebecauseafterall,Ithink,that’sthepurposeofhighereducation,andthat’swhyweareallhere,tobeabletothinkforourselvesandmakeourowndecisions.

China’snotjustthoseheadlines.Theburgeoningeconomywithuniquepolitics.Itisnotjusttheworld’sfactoryorthenextbigsuperpower,it’ssomuchmore,abillionpeoplewithrichculture,amazingstories,andasaproductofbothofthosecultures,Iwanttohelpfosteranunderstandingbetweenthetwo.And[x]thatincrediblerelationship,becauseknowingbothsidesofthecoin,Ireallythinkthatthereisalovestorywaitingtobetold,readytounfold.AndI’monlyhalfjokingwhenIsaidlovestorybecauseIbelieveitisthestoriesthatwillsaveusandbringusclosertogether.

Andmythesisstatementfortoday’stalkisthattherelationshipbetweenEastandWestneedstobeandcanbefixedviapopculture,andI’mgoingtotryandbackitup.Now,theUNSec-GenBanKiMoonsaid,“Therearenolanguagesrequiredinthemusicalworld.Thatisthepowerofmusic.Thatisthepowerofheart.”Throughthispromotionofartswecanbetterunderstandthecultureandcivilisationofotherpeople.Andinthiseraofinstabilityandintolerance,weneedtopromotebetterunderstandingthroughthepowerofmusic.TheUNSec-Genthinksthatweneedmoremusic,andIthinkthatheisright.Musicandartshavealwaysplayedakeyroleinmylife,inbuildingrelationships,replacingwhatoncewereignorance,fearandhatred,withacceptance,friendshipandevenlove.

SoIhaveastrongcaseforpromotingmusicbetweenculturesbecauseithappenedtomeearlyinmylife.IwasborninRochester,NewYork,IbarelyspokeawordofChinese.Ididn'tknowthedifferencebetweenTaiwanorThailand.[laughter]IwasasAmericanasapplepie,untilonedayonthe3rdgradeplayground,theinevitablefinallyhappened:IgotteasedforbeingChinese.Noweverykidgetsteasedorbeingmadefunofintheplayground,butthiswasfundamentallydifferentandIknewrightthenandthere.Sothiskidlet’scallhimBrian[x].Hestartedmakingfunofme,saying“Chinese,Japanese,dirtyknees,lookatthese!”[laughing]We’relaughingnowbutithurt!

IcouldstillrememberhowIfelt,Ifeltashamed,Ifeltembarrassed.ButIlaughedalongwitheveryone.AndIdidn'tknowwhatelsetodo.Itwaslikehavinganoutofbodyexperience.AsifIcouldlaughatthatChinesekidontheplaygroundwithalltheotherAmericansbecauseIwasoneofthem,rightWrong,onmanylevels.AndIwasfacingthefirstanddefinitelynotthelasttimetheharshrealitywasthatIwasminorityinRochester,whichinthosedayshadanAsianpopulationof1%.AndIwasconfused.IwantedtopunchBrian.Iwantedtohurthimforputtingmeinthatsituationbuthewasfasterthanme,andhewasstrongerthanme,andhewouldkickmybuttandwebothknewthat,soIjusttookitin.Ididn'ttellanyoneorsharewithanyonethesefeelings,IjustheldtheminandIletthemfester.Andthosefeelingswouldsurfaceinastrangelytherapeuticwayformethroughmusic,anditwasnocoincidencethataroundatthattimeIstartedgettinggoodwiththeviolin,andtheguitarandthedrums.AndI’dsoondiscoveredthatbyplayingmusicorsingingthattheotherkidswouldforabriefmomentforgetaboutmyraceorcolorandacceptmeandthenbeabletoseemeforwhoItrulyam:ahumanbeingwhoisemotional,spiritual,curiousabouttheworld,andhasaneedforlovejustlikeeveryoneelse.

Andbythesixthgrade,guesswhoaskedmeifIwouldthedrummeroftheirbandBrian.AndIsaidyes.Andthat’swhenwetogetherformedanelementaryschoolrockbandcalled…Nirvana.I’mnotkidding,IwasinarockbandcalledNirvanabeforeKurtCobain'sNirvanawaseverknown…SowhenNirvanacameout,BrianandIwerelike,heyhe’sstealingourname!Butreallywhatattractedmetomusicatthisyoungagewasjustthat,andstilliswhatIloveaboutmusic,isthatitbreaksdownthewallsbetweenusandshowsussoquicklythetruththatwearemuchmorealikethanwe[think].

Andtheninhighschool,Ilearnedthatmusicwasn’tjustaboutconnectingwithothers,likeBrianandIwereconnectedthroughmusic.Itwasapowerfultoolofinfluenceandinspiration.Sam[Nguyen]wasmyhighschooljanitor.HewasanimmigrantfromVietnamwhobarelyspokeawordofEnglish.Samscrubbedthefloorsandcleanedthebathroomsofourschoolfortwentyyears.Henevertalkedtothekids,andthekidsnevertalkedtoSam.Butonedaybeforetheopeningnightofourschool’sannualmusical,hewalkeduptomeholdingaletter,andIwastakenabackandIwasthinking,whyisSamthejanitorapproachingmeAndhegavemethisletterthatI’vekeptittothisday,itwasscrawledinshakyhandwritteninallcapitalsanditread,inmyallyearsworkingasajanitoratSutherland,youwerethefirstAsianboytoplaytheleadrole.I’mgoingtobringmy6-year-olddaughtertowatchyouperformtonightbecauseIwanthertoseethatAsianscanbeinspiring.

Andthatletterjustflooredme.Iwas15yearsoldandIwasabsolutelystunned.ThatwasthefirsttimeIrealizedhowmusicwassoimportant.WithBrian,ithelpedtwokidswhowereinitiallyenemiestobecomefriends,butwithSam,musicwentbeyondtheone-on-one.Itwasanevenhigherlevel;itinfluencedothersIdidn’tevenknow,inwaysIcouldneverimagine.Ican’ttellyouhowgratefulIamtoSamtothisday,hereallyisoneofthepeoplewhohelpedmediscovermylife’spurpose,andIhadnoideathatsomethingIdidcouldmeanmorethaneverimaginedtoanimmigrantfromVietnamwhobarelyevenspokeEnglish.Popculture,music,andtheothermethodsofstorytelling,movies,TVdramas,theyaresokey,andtheydoconnectus,likemeandBrian,anddoinfluenceus,andinspireus.

Thenlet’stakeanotherlookatthisstateofunion,theEastandWestunion,withthissoftpowerbias.HowisthesoftpowerexchangebetweenthesetworoommatesAretheresongsinEnglishthathavebecomehitsinChinaSure.HowaboutmoviesWell,therearesomanythatChinahashadtolimitthenumberofHollywoodmoviesimportedintothecountrysothatlocalfilmscouldevenhaveachanceatsuccess.Whatabout[x],well,[inaudibleexchangewithanaudiencemember],yeah,andmovies,welltherewasCrouchingTiger[HiddenDragon],thatwas13yearsago.Well,Ithinkthere’sabitofanimbalancehere.It’scalled“softpowerdeficit”,thatistosaytheWestinfluencestheEastmorethanviceversa.Forgivemeforusing“East”and“West”kindaloosely,it’saloteasiertosaythan“English-speaking…language”or“Asian-speaking…language/Chinese”,I’mmakinggeneralisationandIhopeyoucangowithmeonthis.

Andit’sjustintrinsicallyaproblem,thisimbalanceinpopcultureinfluence.AndIthinkso.Inanyhealthyrelationship,friendship,marriage,isn’titimportantforbothsidestomakeanefforttounderstandtheotherAndthatthisexchangeneedstohaveahealthybalanceAndhowdoweaddressthisAsanambassadorforChinesepopmusicandmovies,Ihavetoaskmyselfaquestion:WhydoesthisdeficitexistIsitbecauseChinesemusicjust[islame].Doyouwantmetoanswerthat[laughter]YeahIthinkIseesomeofyouarelike,stopcomplainingandwriteahitsong!Psydidit!Butthere’struthinthat.Theargumentbeingthat,thecontentthatwe’vecreatedjustisn’tasinternationallycompetitive.Butwhyshouldn’tit

LookatKoreanpop,lookatK-popforexample.Koreanisanexport-basedeconomyandtheyareoutwardlookingandtheymustbeoutwardlooking.Chinesepopontheotherhandcanjuststaydomestic,touralloverChina,stickinterritoriesandcomfortablysustain.Sowhenyou’rethatbigandpowerful,withover160citiesinChinawithamillionormorepeople,youtendtokindaturninwardandbecomplacent.SothiscertainlycanbemadeanargumentmadeforChinesepopnotbeingmarketedwithinternationalsensibilities,buttheothersideoftheargumentIthinkismoreinterestingandthoughtprovokingandevenmoretrue,isthatWesternearsaren’tfamiliarwithandthereforedon’treallyunderstandhowtoappreciateChinesemusic.Ouch!

ThereasonIthinkthattheargumentholdswaterthoughisbecausethat’sexactlywhatIwentthrough,soIhappentoknowathingortwoaboutlearningtoappreciateChinesepopasaWesterner.'CosIwas17yearsoldwhenIwentfrombeinganAsiankidinAmericatobeinganAmericankidinAsia,andtheentireparadigmsuddenlygotflippedonitshead.IgrewuplisteningtoBeastieBoys,LedZeppelin,GunsandRoses,andIfoundmyselfinTaiwanlisteningtotheradioandthinking,where’sthebeatWhere’sthescreechingguitarsolosHereIamasanAmericankidinAsialisteningtoChinesemusicforthefirsttimeandthinkingthat"thisstuffislame.Idon’tlikeit!"Ithoughtitwascheesy,productionvaluewaslow,andthesingerscouldn’tbeltlikeAxlRoseorMariahCarey.

Butthenoneday,IwenttomyfirstChinesepopconcert,anditwasHarlemYuperformingattheTaipeiMusicCentre,andasheperformed,IlookedaroundtheaudienceandIsawtheirfacesandthelooksintheireyesandtheirresponsetohismusic,anditwascleartomefinallywheretheproblemlay.Itwasn’tthatthemusicthatwaslacking,itwasmyabilitytoappreciateitandtohearitintherightway.Thecrowd,theywouldsingalongandbetotallyimmerseinhismusic,andIthoughtthatitwassignificant,thatIwasmissingthepointandfromnowon,Iwasgoingtosomehowlearnhowtogetit,Iwasgonnalearnhowtohearwithbothears,andIdeconstructedandanalysedwhatitwasthatmadeChineseaudiencesconnectwithcertaintypesofmelodies,andrhythms,andsongstructures,andlyrics,andthat’swhatI’vebeendoingforthepastalmosttwentyyears,andittookmealongtimeandIamstilllearningbutatsomepoint,InotonlybegantobeabletoappreciatethemusicbutIstartedbeingabletocontributetoitandcreatemyownfreshspinsonthetried-and-true.

AndIthinkthishappenstoeveryone,really,whoisontheoutsidelookingin.Italwayslooksstrangeifyoulookedatthingsfromyourperspective,you’realwaysgoingtothinkthatthesepeopleareweirdos,what’swrongwiththem,whyaretheylisteningtothesestuffAndI’msayingthatyoucanmaketheeffort[x],itcanbedone,andI’mlivingproofofthat.AndasanambassadorofChinesepop,I’mtryingtogetpeopletoopenuptoasoundthattheymaynotfeelispalatableonthefirstlisten.SowhatelsecanwedotoreducethisimbalanceinourpopularculturesWell,maybewecouldtalkalot,tourmoreoutsideofChinaButseriously,actuallyIthinkthetideshavealreadystartedtochange,veryslowly,verycautiously,almostcalculatedly.

Youseemorecross-culturalexchangenow,moreinterestinChina,definitelyalotofjointventures,alotofco-productionsinrecentyears,IronMan3,Transformers,[53][laughter],ResidentEvil,reallyit’sbeginningtobekindalikeaworldpop,andthat’swhatI’mlookingforwardtoandfocusingonthesedays.There’sJ-pop,there’sK-pop,there’sC-pop,andthere’slikethisW-popthat’skindastartingtoemerge.It’sworldpop,andIlovethatidea.It’snotWorldMusic.ThereusedtobesectioninHMVcalledWorldMusic,andIwaslikeEthnomusicologyclassincollege.

Butworldpopismoreaboutbreakingandtearingdownage-oldstereotypes,theartificialconfinesthathavekeptusapartforwaytoolong.It’sameltingpot,andit’smosaic,thatevenifwelookedupclose,we’dstillseethecoloursandflavoursofeachcultureindetail.AndwherecanwegotolistentoworldpopIdon’tthinkthere’saworldpopstationormagazine,unfortunately,therearenone--thereshouldbe.Thereistheinternet,andYouTubehasproventobeadrivingforceforworldpop.Britain’sGotTalentmadeSusanBoylethehottestactintheworld,andsheachievedthatnotthroughtherecordlabelsorthenetworks,butthroughgrassrootssharing.GangnamStyleisanothergreatworldpop,andhowthatjusttookoverbecamehugeworldwideworldpopphenomenon.Soworldpopasitsuggestsisaworldwidepopcultureissomethingthatcanbesharedbyallofusandgivesusalotofcommonground.

Sotoday,what’smycallofactionI’vealreadyprovenmulticulturalexchangebetweentheEastandWest,IthinkIhavemadethatclear,buthowIthink…youcanallbecomepopsingers,really,Ithinkthat’sthe[x],unlessthat’swhatyoureallywantto.

Mycallofactionisthis:buildandprotectthatroommaterelationshipbetweentheEastandWest.Valuethisrelationshipandtakeownershipofit.Don’tcometoOxfordasanexchangestudentfromTaiwanandonlyhangoutwithotherChinesestudents.WhywouldyoudothatYoucoulddothatin[x]orNanjingorwhereveryoucamefrom.Don’tbuyintotheheadlinesorthestereotypesorinthehypernationalism.Thinkforyourselves,andthisgoesfortheEastandtheWest,both.Gettoknowoneanotherandthinkforyourselvesanddon’tbelievethehype.Forjustamoment,ifwecouldjustdisregardthegovernmentsandwhatthemediaaresaying,justforthesakeoftheargument,withourowntoolsofcriticalthinking,canwebuildrelationshipsthatactuallyseeoneanotherasindividualhumanbeingsandnotfacesormembersofaparticularethnicityornationalityOfcoursewecandothat.

Andthat’sthegoalanddream,Ithinkoftheromanticartistsandthemusicians,Ithinkit’salwaysbeenthere.Andthat’swhatIreachfor,andthatmakesmusicsopowerfulandsotrue,thatbreaksdowninstantlyanddisintegratesalltheartificialbarriersthatwecreatebetweeneachother,government,nationality,black,brown,yellow,white,whatevercolouryouare,andshowseachotherourhearts,ourfears,ourhopes,ourdreams,anditturnsoutinendthattheEastisn’tthatfarafterall,andthewest,wellthewest,ain’tsowhite.Andthroughunderstandingeachother’spopularcultures,wegaininsightintoeachother’sheartandtrueselves.
