2、urney that I made down that river on a raft and the adventures I had on the way.It all started when my best friend, Tom Sawyer, and I 3f $12,000 in a cave. That money made us 4r We got $6,000 each. Judge Thatcher, an important man in St. Petersburg, put it in the bank and now we're getting a dol
3、lar a day interest.Then a kind old lady 5c Widow Douglas invited me to live with her because I haven't got a family or a 6h . My mother died along time ago and then my dad, Pap, disappeared. He was a violent man especially when he was drunk', which was most of the time, and he often beat me.
4、 I was scared of him .I didn't go to school 7l the other boys of my age. I lived on the streets and in the woods.My life 8c after I went to live with the widow. She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me and9 t me how to eat at a table.But then her sister

7、 for me were eating my meals at the table and sleeping in a soft bed. I missed my old life.Sometimes I ran away and spent a few days in the woods. I felt 14f there and I was happy. I fished and hunted- all day. At night I slept under the stars. The months passed and winter came. The 15w got cold. On
8、e morning I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school I 16s some footprints outside the widow's house. There was a cross on the heel of the left one. My heart jumped. Only one person wore boots with a cross on the left heel! Pap!He's 17h about my money, 'I thought. An
9、d he wants it!'That night I went to see Jim. Jim had a magic ball made of animal hair. There was a spirit inside the ball that could answer people's questions about the 18f .I have two 19q , Jim,' I said. What is Pap going to do? And is Pap going to stay?' Jim whispered to the ball a
10、nd rolled it on the floor. Then he put his ear next to it and20 l .'Your father doesn't know what he's going to do yet,' Jim said.Maybe he'll stay or maybe he'll go.'I picked up my candle and went back to the house. I crept quietly upstairs because it was late and I didn&
11、#39;t want to 21w Widow Douglas up. The door of my bedroom was open. I went in. A man with dirty black hair and a long black beard was sitting on the bed. 12、he looked at me, 1N of us spoke for several minutes. Then he said:Where did you get those new clothes?'Widow Douglas 2b them for me.'"Why did she do that? You aren't her son.''She looks after me now. She sends me to school every day. I can't go to school in dirty old 3c
13、.'When he 4h this, his face went red and he shouted, 'I'm your father. You must do what I tell you to do. And I say that you must stop going to school!''But I'm learning to read.'"Why do you want to learn to 5r ? I can't read. Do you think you are better than you
14、r father?'"Maybe I do, maybe I don't,' I replied."Don't be cheeky'!' he shouted, and he hit me with his stick.Then he smiled, a horrible 6s . 'I heard that you're rich,' he said. That's why I've come to see you. I need your 7m . Give it to me!
15、9;I haven't got it. Judge' Thatcher's got it.''Then I'll go and ask him for it in the morning,' he said. He stood up and looked around the room. 'How much have you got in your pockets?'I had one 8d . I gave it to him and he left. The next day he went to the judge&
16、#39;s house but the judge didn't give him my money.After that Pap watched me all the time. One morning, when I was on my way to 9s , he caught me. He took me up the river in a boat. We went about three miles and then we stopped the boat and went into the woods. We found an old log cabin' and
17、 this became my new 10h .Pap kept me with him all the time so I didn't have a 11c to escape. But I didn't mind being in the woods again because we went hunting and fishing every day and I 12e that. Sometimes Pap went to the town to sell fish and rabbits and buy provisions.4 A PRISONER IN THE

When he came home two or three days later, he always beat me with his stick. We lived like this for several months. Then I
19、 got 14t of the beatings' and I began to think about escaping.Once when I was locked in the cabin, I found an old saw in a corner. Pap didn't know it was there. I cleaned it and started to cut a hole in the cabin wall. It 15t me more than an hour to make a small 16h but, before I could climb
20、 through it, I heard the key in the door.I quickly put an old blanket' over the hole, lay down on my bed and 17c my eyes. The door opened and Pap came in. 'Well, hello Pap,' I said, yawning and stretching'. 'Did you get the provisions?'Pap didn't go away again for three o
21、r four weeks. We hunted and 18f as usual, but he became more and more violent and beat me more often.While I was fishing one day, an empty canoe drifted past me. I couldn't believe my luck! I 19j into it and paddled down the river to a little place where the branches of the trees hung low over the water. I hid the 20c there and went back to the cabin to wait for my chance to escape.I never saw anyone in the woods but Pap saw some 21m one day. The next time he went to the town he gave me his gun.'I
