2、一個例子是:"Footthebill."“Foot的意思是-只腳而“bill在這兒的解釋是賬單.“Footthebill.并不是把帳單踩在腳底下,而是付賬的意思.另外,有的時候,一個詞匯有好幾種解釋.就拿下面一句話來作例子吧:例句-1:“Wearrivedtwohourslateatthebigblow-outforCharlie'sbirthdaybecauseourcarhadablow-out.這句話里第一個blow-out是指規(guī)模很大的聚會,第二個blow-out是指汽車的輪胎炸了.整個句子的意思是:由于我們車胎炸了,所以我們晚了兩個小時才到達(dá)查理舉行生日宴
3、會的地方.還有一些習(xí)慣用語從字典上的意思來看是相同的,但是它們使用的場合卻不同.下面兩個習(xí)慣用語就是很好的例子.一個是“Lock,stockandbarrel另外一個是:"Hook,lineandsinker.Lock,stockandbarrel和Hook,lineandsinker都是全部的意思,可是用法卻不同.我們先來舉一個Lock,stockandbarrel的例子:例句-2:“MrRockefellerboughtthewholeoilcompanylock,stockandbarrel.這句話的意思是:洛克菲勒先生把整個石油公司買了下來.換句t說,也就是他買了這個石油公司
4、的大樓、油井和其他屬于這個公司的資產(chǎn).Hook,lineandsinker雖然也和lock,stockandbarrel一樣是全部的意思,可是它還帶有受騙的意思.例如:例句-3:“IwarnedSallynottobelievethatman'sstoriesabouthowrichhewas,butsheswallowedthemhook,lineandsinker.Aftershemarriedhim,shefoundoutthatheowedeveryoneinhisofficemoney.他說:我告訴沙利不要相信那個男人說的他多么有錢之類的話.可是沙利卻一點都沒有疑心他.等到結(jié)
