ItwasnotonlyEnglandthatthoughtsoeither.Hughes's

bookwasalsopublishedinAmerica,whereitwontheGalbraith

prize,amajorliteraryaward.Butthen,in1963,SylviaPlath,

ayoungAmericanpoetwhomhehadfirstmetatCambridge

Universityin1956,andwhobecamehiswifeinthesummerof

thatyear,committedsuicide.Hugheswasvilifiedforlong

afterthat,especiallybyfeministsinAmerica.In1998,the

yearhedied,Hughesbrokehisownself-imposedpublicsilence
