ForthemandsomeolderAmericans,theirso-called**goldenyearsMareattimesnotso

pleasant,forthisperiodcanmeanthedeclineofnotonlyone'shealthbutthelossof

identityandself-worth.Inmanysocieties,thisself-identityiscloselyrelatedwithour

socialstatus,occupation,materialpossessions,orindependence.Furthermore,weoftenlive

insocietiesthatvaluewhatis"new”orinfashion,andourownusageofwordsinthe

EnglishlanguageisoftenasignofbadnewsforolderAmericans.Imeanhowwouldyour

familyreactifyoucamehometonightexclaiming,“Hey,cometothelivingroomandseethe

OLDblackandwhiteTVIbrought!MUnfortunately,theword"old"callstomindimagesof

theneedtoreplaceordiscard.

Now,manyofthelecturesgivenatthisconferencehavefocusedontheissuesofpension

reform,medicalcare,andthedevelopmentofpublicfacilitiesforseniorcitizens.And

whilethesearevitalissuesthatmustbeaddressed,I'dliketofocusmycommentsonan

importantissuethatwillaffecttheoveral1successoftheotherprogramsmentioned.This

hastodowithchangingourperspectivesonwhatitmeanstobeapartofthisgroup,and

findingmeaningfulrolestheelderlycanplayandshouldplayinoursocieties.
