marketersandteachershavelonglookedforfunwaystoengagepeople's
reward-seekingorcompetitivespirits.CrackerJackshasbeen"gamifying"itssnack
foodbyputtingasmallprizeinsideformorethan100years,headds,andthe
turn-of-the-centurysteelmagnate(巨頭)CharlesSchwabissaidtohaveoftencome
intohisfactoryandwrittenthenumberoftonsofsteelproducedonthepastshifton
thefactoryfloor;thusmotivatingthenextshiftofworkerstobeatthepreviousone.

businesses.Theplatformsthataremosteffectiveturnemployees'ordinaryjobtasks
intopartofarichadventurenarrative."Whatmakesagamegame-likeisthatthe
playeractuallycaresabouttheoutcome,"Werbachsays."Theprincipleisabout
understandingwhatismotivatingtothisgroupofplayers,whichrequiressome
understandingofpsychology."
G.Somepeople,Werbachsays,aremotivatedbycompetition.Salespeople
oftenfallintothiscategory.Forthem,therightkindofgamificationmightbeturning
theirsalespitchesintoacompetitionwithotherteammembers,completewitha
digitalleaderboardshowingwhoiswinningatalltimes.Othersaremoremotivated
bycollaborationandsocialexperiences.OnecompanyWerbachhasstudieduses
gamificationtocreateasenseofcommunityandboostemployees'morale(士氣).
Whenemployeeslogintotheircomputers,they'reshownapictureofoneoftheir
coworkersandaskedtoguessthatperson'sname.
H.Gamificationdoesnothavetobedigital.MonicaCornettirunsacompany
thatgamifiesemployeetrainings.Sometimesthisinvolvestechnology,butoftenit
doesnot.Sherecentlydesignedagamificationstrategyforasalestrainingcompany
withastorm-chasingtheme.Employeesformed"stormchaserteams"andcompeted
instorm-themededucationalexercisestoearnvariousrewards."Rewardsdonot
havetobestuff,"Cornettisays."Rewardscanbeflexibleworkinghours."Another
training,thisoneforpayrolllaw,usedaSnowWhiteandtheSevenDwarfstheme.
"SnowWhite"isavailableforeveryonetouse,butthe"dwarfs"arestillunder
copyright,soCornettiinventedsound-alikecharacters(GrumpyGus,DopeyDan)to
illustratespecificpayrolllawprinciples.

largedigitalleaderboardstodisplayhowefficientlylaundryworkerswereworking
comparedtooneanother.Someemployeesfoundtheboardmotivating.Toothers,it
wastheoppositeoffun.Somebegantostoptakingbathroombreaks,worriedthatif
theirproductivityfelltheywouldbefired.Pregnantemployeesstruggledtokeepup.
InaLosAngelesTimesarticle,oneemployeereferredtotheboardasa"digital
whip.11"Itactuallyhadaverynegativeeffectonmoraleandperformance,"Werbach
says.
K.Still,gamificationonlystandstobecomemorepopular,hesays,"asmore
andmorepeoplecomeintotheworkforcewhoarefamiliarwiththestructuresand
expressionsofdigitalgames."nWearefarfromreachingthepeak,"Cornettiagrees.
