2、teacher deborah burk, was sticking to the 19th-century concept of dividing the day into 42-minute periods (still common in many schools across the country), with each period counted as a credit toward graduation. back then, burk says, students focused more on the clock than on what she was saying. t
3、hey werent entirely to blame. the system, she felt, didnt let her do much beyond repeating the same lectures over and over: there wasnt time to challenge students to research into details. “you couldnt analyze their progress - or even think about it. in 1992, dr. george h. wood, an ohio university e
4、ducation professor whod never run a high school, was named principal. he asked students for their ideas, organized visits to programs around the country, and met frequently with staff. the result: time passed quickly. with some arm-twisting of superintendents and state lawmakers, federal hocking mov
5、ed from the tiresome credit system to a less-is-more schedule tied to four 80-minute classes. “we decided, wood says, “to teach fewer things better. in american history, for example, the emphasis changed from devoting equal time to every era to focusing on big events. the school developed its own cr
6、edit system based on important studies but added other requirements - a senior portfolio, and a yearlong project created by the students thats not always linked directly to their coursework. project topics range from writing a world-foods cookbook to the restoration of an old tractor. graduation bas
7、ed just on racking up a set number of credits was no longer possible.other changes followed. the seven-minute daily homeroom period - basically an attendance call - was replaced by an hour-long advisory meeting every wednesday morning. each teacher advises the same 14 or 15 kids through high school.

15、ry or money loss. music therapy has also been successful in aiding children to overcome disabilities. children can move their bodies with the music and stamp along to the beat. why is music a useful therapy? music is soothing and relaxingbut it also stimulates our brains. emotionally and physically,
16、 we respond to the sounds of music. but the complexity of music(the different tempos,rhythms,melodies and harmonies) provokes(激發(fā))the biggest response. thus,classical music is most typically used for therapies due to complex sounds and patterns. although rap or hip hop might be fun to listen to,its u
17、nlikely that such styles of music would produce the same kind of therapeutic effect playing a musical instrument rather than simply listening to music can also be therapeutic for some people,helping relieve stress and anxiety have scientists been able to prove that music can heal disease? music has
18、been shown to reduce pain in cancer patients by increasing the release endorphins(內(nèi)啡肽). endorphins are the bodys natural painkillers,and when we listen to music,our brains respond by releasing these natural painkillers. it has also been known to contribute to the brain development of the babies who
19、have just been born and even babies still in the mothers womb. certain types of music have also been found to lower blood pressure and slow a persons heart rate. many people are hopeful that music could replace the need for some medications(藥物)that are normally used to treat certain illnesses. at pr
