wealthinwhichallcitizenshadarighttoshare.

Athensreachedthepointwhenthefreedomshereallywantedwasfreedomfromresponsibility.There

couldbeonlyoneresult.Ifmeninsistedonbeingfreefromtheburdenofself-dependenceandresponsibility

fbrthecommongood,theywouldceasetobefree.Responsibilityisthepriceeverymanmustpayfor

freedom.Itistobehadonnootherterms.Athens,theAthensofAncientGreece,refusedresponsibility;she

reachedtheendoffreedomandwasnevertohaveitagain.

But,"theexcellentbecomesthepermanent,"Aristotlesaid.Athenslostfreedomforever,butfreedomwas

notlostforeverfortheworld.AgreatAmerican,JamesMadison,referredto:"Thecapacity(能力)ofmankind

fbrself-government."NodoubthehadnotanideathathewasspeakingGreek.Athenswasnotinthefarthest
