Theclasswasfulloflovelypeoplewhoglidedeffortlessly,seeminglyneverconfusedaboutwheretomovenextorwhatthenamesofthemoveswere.Theyassuredmethattheyhadbeenbeginnersoncetoo,andthatIwouldbeabletorememberallthemoveswithinthreeorfouryears.Threetofouryears!Graduatedegreestooklesstime.
ButIcouldseetheywereright.Aftersixmonths,Istillfounditdifficulttocompleteeventheopening13movesonmyown.Icouldonlywatchandcopy,watchandcopy-waitingforthedaythatmyownbodywouldmemorizetheinternalrhythmsoftheset.
ThepatienceneededforsuchslowprogresswassoantitheticaltothewayInormallyapproachedphysicalactivitythatIfounditalmostunbearable.Previously,anysportthatIcouldn'tdoeasily.Ijustrejected.Ineverdidlearnhowtothrowasoftballorcatchit,orhowtodothefrontcrawl.Istucktoactivitiesthatneedednohoning.

Whencomparingtheoverallwelfarelevelofdifferentlives,itseemsnaturalenoughtothinkofaperson'slifeasasortofcontainerforvariousgoodandbadexperiences.Someonewhoselifecontainslovingrelationships,astablehomelife,fulfillingworkandexperiencesliketravelandeducationseemsbetteroffthansomeonewhoselifedoesnotcontainthesegoods.Thegoodsandthebadsarewhatweevaluate;the'container'theysitinisbasicallyneutral.Butthatbalancesheetmodelseemstomissanother,moreelusivekindofvalue.
