I.AnalysisoftheNewCurriculumStandardsTheme

(A)ThemeClassification

Thisteachingcontentfallsunderthesubthemeof"SocialNormsandResponsibilities",whichispartofthebroader"PeopleandSociety"themecategory.Byfocusingonthecreationofclassrules,studentswilllearnwhyrulesareimportant.Ruleshelpbuildagoodclassenvironmentandmakesureeveryoneintheclasscangrowandlearnwell.Thisfitswithwhatthenewcurriculumstandardswanttoteachhelpingstudentsunderstandtheirroleinsocietyandhowtoberesponsible.

(B)RelevancetotheCurriculumStandards

ThenewcurriculumstandardssaythatEnglishclassesshouldhelpstudentsuseEnglishtosolverealproblems.Inthis"MakeClassRules"lesson,studentswillworktogetheringroups.Theywilltalk,plan,andwritedownrulesinEnglish.Thisway,theycanimprovefourimportantskills:languageability,culturalawareness,thinkingquality,andlearningability.StudentswillalsogetabetterunderstandingofrulesindifferentcultureswhileusingEnglish.

II.CorepetencyGoals

(A)LanguageAbility

Studentswillbeabletousemodalverbssuchas"must","mustn’t","can",and"can’t"correctly.Forexample,theycansaythingslike"Wemustlistentoteacherscarefully"or"Wemustn’tbelateforclass"whentalkingaboutclassrules.

Theywilllearnusefulphrasesfordifferentpartsoftherulemakingprocess,like"chooseagoal","brainstormrules","designaposter",and"sharerules".Withthesephrases,studentscanmunicatesmoothlywiththeirclassmatesduringthewholeactivity.

(B)CulturalAwareness

Studentswillfindoutthatrulesindifferentclasses,whetherinChinaorothercountries,oftenhavethingsinmon.Forexample,rulesaboutbeingkindandhelpingothersareimportanteverywhere.Understandingthesemonpointshelpscreateafriendlyclass.

Bylookingathowrulesaremadeandsaidindifferentcultures,studentswilllearntorespectandunderstandculturaldifferences.Thishelpsthembeemoreopenminded.

(C)ThinkingQuality

Whenstudentsbrainstormrulesingroups,theywilllearntothinkindifferentways.Theywilltrytofindmanydifferentideastohelpreachtheclassgoals.

Studentswilllearntothinkcritically.Theywilldiscusswhetheraruleisgoodornot.Forexample,theymighttalkaboutif"Notalkinginclass"isreallyagoodruleandwhy.

(D)LearningAbility

Throughgroupwork,studentswilllearnhowtoworktogether.Theywilldividetasksinthegroupsomewrite,somedraw,andsomereport.Thisway,theycanlearnfromeachotherandsolveproblemstogether.

Studentswillusean"evaluationform"tochecktheirownlearning.Thishelpsthemknowwhattheydidwellandwhattheyneedtoimprove.ThentheycanplantheirownEnglishlearningbetter.

III.TeachingKeyandDifficultPoints

(A)TeachingKeyPoints

Themostimportantthingisforstudentstousemodalverbscorrectlywhenmakingrules.Theyshouldbeabletoexpressrulesclearlyandaccurately.

Studentsneedtofinisheachstepoftherulemakingproject.Thisincludeschoosingagoal,thinkingofrules,designinganiceposter,andsharingandvotingontherules.

(B)TeachingDifficultPoints

It'shardforstudentstomakesuretherulesarereallyrelatedtotheclassgoals.Rulesshouldnotbetoogeneralorhavenothingtodowithwhattheclasswantstoachieve.

Studentsneedtomakecreativeandclearposters.ThepostersshouldnotonlyhavecorrectEnglishbutalsolookinterestingsothatotherscaneasilyunderstandtherules.

(A)TeachingMethods

ProjectbasedTeaching:Thewholeclassactivityislikeaproject"MakeClassRules".Theteacherwillbreakthisbigtaskintosmallstepsandguidestudentstofinishthemonebyone.

SituationalTeaching:Theteacherwillcreatereallifeclasssituations.Forexample,thinkaboutproblemsintheclassroom.Thismakesstudentsfeeltheneedtomakerules.

EvaluationandIncentive:Theteacherwillusedifferentwaystoevaluatestudents,likecheckingtheirperformanceinclass,theirposters,andtheirselfevaluations.Goodworkwillbepraisedtoencouragestudents.

(B)LearningMethods

GroupCooperativeLearning:Studentswillworkingroups.Eachstudenthasajob,likebeingawriter,adesigner,oraspeaker.Theyhelpeachotherandlearnfromeachother.

IndependentInquiryLearning:Whenthinkingofrulesorcheckingtheirownwork,studentswillthinkontheirown.Theywilltrytofindgoodideasandimprovethemselves.

VisualLearning:Bymakingposters,studentscanturnwordsintopicturesandcolors.Thishelpsthemremembertherulesbetterandshowtheircreativity.
