Thetrend,then,wastowardthe"pennypaper"-aterm

meantnewspapersthatcouldbeboughtinsinglecopiesonthe
street.
Thisdevelopmentdidnottakeplaceovernight.Ithadbeen
possible(butnoteasy)tobuysinglecopiesofnewspapers
before1830,butthisusuallymeantthereaderhadtogodown
totheprinter'sofficetopurchaseacopy.Streetsaleswere
almostunknown.However,withinafewyears,streetsalesof
newspaperswouldbecommonplaceineasterncities.Atfirst
thepriceofsinglecopieswasseldomapenny-usuallytwoor
threecentswascharged-andsomeoftheolderwell-knownpapers
chargedfiveorsixcents.Butthephrase"pennypaper"caught
thepublic'sfancy,andsoontherewouldbepapersthatdid
indeedsellforonlyapenny.
Thisnewtrendofnewspapersfor"themanonthestreet"
didnotbeginwell.Someoftheearlyventures(企業(yè))were
immediatefailures.Publishersalreadyinbusiness,peoplewho
wereownersofsuccessfulpapers,hadlittledesiretochange
