Today,I’vebeenrecordinganaudiobook.IamexcitedthatIhaverealizedmylife-longdream.

Recently,deliveringmyson’snightlybedtimestoryhasreawakenedmyloveforreadingoutloud-highlightssofarhaveincludedCharlotte’sWeb.ButIneverthoughtI’dgettheopportunitytodoitprofessionally.
Then,lastmonth,IwascontactedbyJamesPlunkett,authorofEndState,aforthcomingbookaboutpoliticalideas.Hehadnodesiretoreadhisbookoutloud,butasafanofmyprogram,hethoughtImightdoareasonablejob.
So,I’vespentthisweekinastudio,simplyreadingstuffoutloud.AndI’mLOVINGIT!
Mindyou,it’sanentirelyunexpectedexperience.It’sdishearteningwhentherecordingneedstobestoppedbecauseI’vejustcarelesslyskippedovera’the’,orhadtoclearmythroat,orcatchmybreath.I’vealsolearnedhowmanywordsI’vebeenmispronouncingmyentirelife:behaviouralisBE-HAYVE-YOU-RAL,notBE-HAYVE-EE-AH-RUL.

Butwhatreallymadeadifferencewerepeople’smotivesforvolunteering.Theresearchersaskedpeopletoratehowimportanttheyfoundvariousreasonsforvolunteering,andtheyfoundthatthemoreimportantpeopleratedreasonssuchasfeelingpityforpeopleinneed,themorelikelytheyweretobealive.Thosewhoratedmotivesrelatedtopersonalbenefitasmoreimportantweremorelikelytohavedied,andjustaslikelytodieasthosewhodidn’tvolunteeratall.Thesereasonsincludedvolunteeringbecausetheyenjoyedthesocialcontact,toescapetheirownproblems,ortoexploretheirownstrengths.
