Allovertheworld,buildingsarenormallyconstructedbyusingoneofthreementalitiesand/ormethods.One,toconstructabuildingwithconventionalmaterialsandtools;two,toconstructabuildingwithmodularizedproductionmethodswithrepetitivepieces;three,toconstructabuildingwiththelatestecoandgreentechnologiesinordertosaveresourceswithoutsacrificingthecomfortablelivingenvironment,harminganddestroyingnature.

AlthoughChinahasabundantcheaplabor,itlackssufficientresourcesandenergyreserve.WiththerapidgrowthofChina’soverallstrengthandeconomicpower,andbeingthethirdlargesteconomyintheworld,aswellasanationwiththemostforeignreserve,Chinacannotcontinuetheuseof“fighting-the-war-with-bare-hands”mentalityinitsconstructionindustry.Chinamustdevelopitshigh-techandecohousingbothinitscitiesandruralregions.

Whenonedoesurbanplanning,usuallytwomindsetswillquicklyappearinoneshead.Someholdthatweshouldplanttreesnowsoourfuturegenerationscouldenjoytheshades.Andsomebelievethatoneshouldresolveone’sownimmediateproblemsnowandleavetheconsequencesforthefuturegenerationstosolve.

Whenyouarepoor,youwillopttotakethesecondoptionasstayingaliveisimportant.Butonceyouareanableindividual,thefirstoptionshallbetheonlywaytogo.Onemustrealizethatittakesyearsforaplantedtreetomatureandyearstocleanoutapollutedriver.Ourfuturegenerationwillpayadearpriceforourmistakesandunwisedecisionsmadetoday.Thewealthierandmorecivilizedasocietyis,themoreattentionitscitizenwillpaytoitsfuturegeneration’swelfare.

Chinesepeopleknowthatresourcesarebecomingscarcer,foodpricesarerising,theenvironmentisworseningandglobalwarmingseemsheretostay.Chinacannolongeraffordnotexecutingenergyandresourceconservation.Chinamustbuildmoregreenbuildingsforthesakeofitsfuturegenerations.

Foralongtime,IhavebeenrecommendingtotheChinesegovernmenttorequireitsgovernmentalbuildingsmandatorilyadopttheuseofgreenbuildingtechnologies.Iamgladtohearthatmanygovernmentalbuildings,especiallyatthecentralgovernmentallevel,arenowbeingbuiltwithsuchenergy-savingtechniques.

InmylecturestoChinesegovernmentofficials,IhavesaidthatGreenBuildingsarethetrendoffuture.Itisanimportantdirectioninsustainabledevelopment.Greenbuildingdoesnotmeantoplantmoretreesandgrassareas,butitreferstothecarefuldesign,construction,operationandreuseorremovalofthebuiltenvironmentinanenvironmentally,energy-efficientandsustainablemanner.GreenandEcoArchitectureisnotaskingmantoliveinaprimitivelifestyle.Itisarevolutiontochallengeanewwayofdesigningarchitecture.Itiswhatweareseekinginourera.Itisforthelongtermbenefitsofman-kind.Inaddition,theessenceofEcoArchitectureisbaseduponitsrespectofnature,protectingourenvironmentthustosustainthehumanrace.

Weneedtoknowthatenergyconsumptionrepresentsthesinglelargestcontrollableoperatingexpenseforabuilding,typicallyathirdofvariableexpenses.Athirtypercentreductioninenergyconsumptioncouldbereadilyachievedbyimprovingthebuildingoperatingstandards.

In2004,greenbuildingcomprisedapproximatelytwopercentofthenewUS“nonresidential”constructionmarket,whichtranslatestoapproximatelya$3.3billionindustry.Basedupontheresearchfindings,McGrawHillConstruction(MHC)projectsthatby2010,between5percentand10p

ercentofnewnon-residentialconstructionstartswillbedesignedusingtheprinciplesofgreenbuilding.

MHCforecastsUSnonresidentialconstructionstartswillbeworthapproximately$204.5billionin2010.Aprojectedgrowthof5-10percenttranslatestoagreenbuildingmarketvaluedbetween$10.2and$20.5billion.

Forallindustryprofessionals,thelargestobstacletogreenbuildingisthehigherperceivedinitialinvestment,whichisabout8percentofthetotalconstructioncost.AndmoreimportantlyfortheChinesegovernmenttoknowisthatcurrentlythereisnotadominant“green”buildingproductmanufacturerinanybuildingproductcategory.Thisisthebiggestmotivationforthemarket,andthiscouldbeagreatbusinessopportunityforChinatoseize.

IhopewithinthefourtrillionRMBstimulusplansChinaisundertaking,theChineseGovernmentwouldtakethisunprecedentedopportunitytopromotemoregreenbuildingtechnology,notonlyinurbancentersbutalsoinitsvastruralre-buildings.

IwouldalsosuggestthatChinalearnsfromtheUSwherebythearchitectsarecalledintoprovideideasforruralhousingprototypedesignsothedesigncanbebothinterestingandefficient.Manyarchitectswouldwelcomeadesigncompetitiononthissubject.Architectsareherenotonlytoservetherichbutmoreimportantlytohelpthepoor.Thiscouldbeawin-winsituationforeveryoneinvolved,anditcouldalsoprovidealeadingexamplefortherestoftheworldtolearnfrom.Bydoingso,Chinawillnotonlyhelpfosteranddevelopabrandnewindustrybaseduponthegreenbuildingtechnologythusgeneratingnewjobs;butitwillalsogaintherespectoftheinternationalcommunity.

世界各地的建筑物,通常采用三個心理和/或方法。一,構建采用常規材料和工具;2,構建模塊化的建筑方法重復件;三,建立一個生態和綠色建筑的最新技術,以節省資源,不犧牲舒適的生活環境,不損害、破壞自然。

雖然中國擁有豐富的廉價勞動力,但缺乏足夠的資源和能源儲備。在快速增長的中國綜合經濟實力,是世界第三大經濟體,以及最多的國家外匯儲備,中國不能繼續使用“fighting-the-war-with-bare-hands”的思想在建筑業。中國必須發展自己的高科技生態住宅在城市和農村地區。

當一個城市規劃,通常會很快出現在頭的心態。有些人認為我們應該種樹,所以我們的后代能夠享受的色調。一些人相信,要解決自己眼前的問題現在離開的后果的后代解決。

當你貧窮時,你會選擇以二選擇生存最重要。但一旦你是一個人,第一個選擇是唯一的路要走。我們必須認識到,需要多年的種植樹成熟和年清理受污染的河流。我們未來的一代將付出昂貴的代價的錯誤和不明智的決策今天。富裕和社會越是文明,更注意其公民將支付其未來一代的幸福。
