1、Unit 13The mystery of the Moonstone.Brief Statements Based on the UnitThe whole unit is concerned with a mysterious storythe Moonstone.It provides the students an opportunity to enjoy the famous story written by Collins.By talking about the pictures and guessing what is happening in the pictures,Ss

2、will try to make up a story by themselves.In that way,the students will be very interested in the real story.Then theyll have a further understanding about the story by listening to the conversations happening in the story.In speaking part,theyll guess the feelings of the characters of the story and

3、 make up two different conversations according to the different situations.After the activities of speaking and listening,theyll enjoy the famous story,at the same time,theyll also learn some useful words and phrases.Besides,they will do some practice to improve their ability to fill in the blanks w

5、roduction of Wikie CollinsWilkie Collins was born on 8 January 1824 and died on 23 September 1889.In those 65 years he wrote 25 novels,more than 50 short stories,at least 15 plays,and more than 100 non-fiction pieces.A close friend of Charles Dickens from their meeting in March 1851 until Dickens de

6、ath in 1870,Collins was one of the best known,best loved,and,for a time,best paid of Victorian fiction writers.But after his death,his reputation declined as Dickens bloomed.Now,Collins is being given more critical and popular attention than he has for fifty years.Almost all his books are in print,h

7、e is studied widely,and new film and television versions of some of his books have been made.Nevertheless,there is still much to be discovered about this superstar of Victorian fiction.2.Sir Arthur Conan DoyleSir Arthur Conan Doyle,English novelist and historian best-known as the creator of the mode

8、rn detective stories and of the character of Sherlock Holmes,was born in Edinburgh,May 22,1859.Educated at Edinburgh University,he practiced medicine until 1891 when he published The White Company,a historical novel.But it was through his cycle of Sherlock Holmes stories that he attained universal r

9、ecognition.His major Sherlock Holmes books include A Study in Scarlet,The Sign of Four,The Adventures,The Memoirs,The Hound of the Baskervilles,The Return,The Valley of Fear,His Last Bow,and The Case-Book.Since their first appearance,the adventures of Sherlock Holmes have been translated into 45 lan

10、guages.One estimate is that the world total sale of these books has long since passed the 100-million-copy mark.It is astonishing to find that Mr Holmes,the hawk-nosed,pipe-smoking,horse-drawn detective of 211B Baker Street,London,is still very much alive.He has been the imperturbable(冷靜的) hero of 1

11、21 movies,some 500 radio scripts(劇本),half a hundred TV performances and more than 20 plays.The first Holmes story was barely noticed in England,and mildly successful in the United States.The second,entitled The Sign of Four established Holmes on both sides of the Atlantic.Doyle signed an agreement t

12、o do 12 Holmes stories for the Strand magazine.As each new tale appeared,Holmes and Watson took a firmer grip on the public.Although Doyle was soon becoming wealthy from his writing,he still considered it a source of income only,not a career.In fact,Doyle grew tired of writing Sherlock Holmes storie

13、s and,in 1893,he killed his hero off in a hand-to-hand battle with Professor Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland.Doyles public was enraged(激怒).Letters poured in,denouncing(譴責) him.In 1903,Sir Arthur consented at last to revive(重新上演) Sherlock Holmes.In 1917,Arthur Conan Doyle declared hi

31、he lost diamond,they sent for a famous detective.The detective investigated every one in the house and even where Jack got the diamond.It was to be regretted that the diamond could not be brought back to Rose at last.Someone saw that the diamond appeared on the forehead of a statue of god in India l
