Ithoughtthatwewouldjustbepassingoutdinnerstothoseinneed,butIfoundoutwewouldbedoing

everythingfrompreparingtoservingthedinner.Webeganpreparingthefood,frommixingsaladdressingto

separatingfrozenmeat.Muchstillneededtobedonebeforedinnerwasserved,butalreadyoutsidethebuilding

manyhomelesspeopleweregathering.Itwasn’tuntilacoupleofhourslaterthatweopenedthedoorsandbegan

servingdinner.

Asthelineofpeoplecametowardme,Igotalittlescared.I’dcomefacetofacewiththehomeless:How

shouldIact?Howwouldtheytreatme?Wouldtheyhatemeforhavingmorethantheydid?Whilesomeofthe

peoplelookedveryfriendly,someofthemlookedsodangerous.Ididn’thavetoomuchtimetoworryaboutit.I

berightthere,whichIfoundquitecomforting.

Ihadneverseensomanypeoplewantingfood.Theywereofallagesandnationalities.Mostofthemwore

clothesthatweretornanddirty.Somelookedliketheyhadtallygivenuponlife,whileothersseemedtobemaking

thebestofthesituation,smilingandjoking.Somewerebetteroffthanothers,buttheyallneededagoodmealand

awarmplacetoeat.Itsaddenedmetothinkofhowmanypeopletherewerewhodidn’thaveaplacetocallhome

andtheonlyfoodtheygotcamefromasoupkitchen.
