LikeAVA,manyotherultra-realisticavatars,androids,andanimatedcharactersappearstuckinadisturbingin-betweenworld:Theyaresolifelikeandyettheyarenot“right.”Thisvoidofstrangenessisknownasthe

uncannyvalley.

UncannyValley:Definition

isaconceptfirstintroducedinthe1970sby

MasahiroMori,thenaprofessoratthe

TokyoInstituteofTechnology.Moricoinedtheterm“uncannyvalley”todescribehisobservationthatasrobotsappearmorehumanlike,theybecomemoreappealing—butonlyuptoacertainpoint.Uponreachingtheuncannyvalley,ouraffinitydescendsinto

afeelingofstrangeness,asenseofunease,andatendencytobescaredorfreakedout.

Theuncannyvalleycanbedefinedaspeople’snegativereactiontocertainlifelikerobots.

Tomakearobotoravatarmorerealisticandmoveitbeyondthevalley,Tinwellsaystoensurethatacharacter’sfacialexpressionsmatchitsemotivetonesofspeech,andthatitsbodymovementsareresponsiveandreflectitshypotheticalemotionalstate.Specialattentionmustalsobepaidtofacialelementssuchastheforehead,eyes,andmouth,whichdepictthecomplexitiesofemotionandthought.“The
