英語報刊的新聞標題中一般不用過去時態,當然更不用過去完成時等時態,而采用現在時態,使讀者閱報時一如置身于這條新聞事件中,這叫做“新聞現在時”
(journalisticpresenttense)。英語新聞標題中常用的動詞時態主要有三種:一般現在時、將來時和現在進行時。
1)一般現在時通常被用來表示過去發生的事通常情況下,報刊所載消息多為已發生過的事,按日常英語語法,標題中的動詞應使用過去時態,但是這樣容易給人產生一種陳舊感,似有“昨日黃花”之嫌,缺乏吸引力。為了彌補這一缺陷,英語新聞標題常用一般現在時從形式上來增強報道的新鮮感(freshness)、現實感(reality)和直接感(immediacy)。ComebackGivesChinaaSensationalThomasCupWin(=TheComebackGaveChinaaSensationalThomasCupWin)中國隊反敗為勝榮獲湯姆斯杯StreetBattleinHeavyShellingasPeaceTalksProceed(=StreetBattleinHeavyShellingasPeaceTalksProceeded)和平會談進行之際巷戰依然炮聲隆隆2)動詞的將來時更多地直接采用動詞不定式來表達英語新聞標題中動詞將來時的表達形式除一般將來時“will+動詞原形”外,更多的還是采用“聯系動詞be+動詞不定式”結構,其中聯系動詞be通常省略,以節省標題字數。換言之,動詞不定式在英語新聞標題中可直接表示未來動作,這是因為不定式標志to只由兩個字母構成,比一般將來時中的will來得少,故頻頻見諸英語報端。例如:LastTwoBeiruitHostagestoGoFree(=TheLastTwoHostagesinBeiruitAretoGoFree)貝魯特最后兩名人質“獲釋在望”3)現在分詞直接表示正在進行的動作或事件對于正在發生的事態或動作,英語新聞標題也按日常英語語法規則處理,采用現在進行時“be+現在分詞”這一形式,但其中“be”又通常省略。因此,剩下的現在分詞便在新聞標題中直接表示正在進行的動作或正在發展的事態。例如:SignsofRiftsAppearinginArgentina’sJunta(=TheSignsofRiftsAreAppearinginArgentina’sJunta)阿根廷軍人政府出現內訌跡象BackgroundInformation
