pond-lockedcreature,butsomeambitionhadmovedhimontoourgravellane,using
therainyweekasapassportfromourfarmtosomewhereelse.

BeforewecametosouthernAppalachia,welivedforyearsinArizona,wherea

crops.Retireesfromrainierclimatesirrigategreenlawnsthatimpersonatethe
grasslandstheyleftbehind.Thetruthencroachesonallthefantasies,though,when
desertresidentswaitmonthsbetweenrains,watchingcactitightentheirbeltsand
roadrunnersskirmishoverpreciousbeadsfromadrippinggardenfaucet.Waterislife.
It'sthesaltystockofourorigins,thepoundingcirculatorysystemoftheworld.It
makesuptwo-thirdsofourbodies,justlikethemapoftheworld;ourvitalfluidsare
saline,liketheocean.Theappledoesn'tfallfarfromthetree.
28EvenwhilewetakeMotherWaterforgranted,humansunderstandinour
bonesthatsheistheboss.Westakeourcivilizationsonthecoastsandmightyrivers.
Ourdeepestdreadisthethreatofhavingtoolittlemoisture——ortoomuch.We've
