betweentheturnofthe20thcenturyandtheeveofWorldWarII,atatimewhennewsprintwas
dirt-cheapandstylishartscriticismwasconsideredanornamenttothepublicationsinwhichit
appeared.Inthosefar-offdays,itwastakenforgrantedthatthecriticsofmajorpaperswould
writeindetailandatlengthabouttheeventstheycovered.Theirswasaseriousbusiness,and
