fluidlevelbeforeyouletanymechanicstarttalkingaboutservicingoradjustingyourtransmissionorsellingyouanewone.Tocheckyourautomatictransmissionfluid,lookforadipstick(油尺)handlestickingoutofyourtransmission.Thisislocatedtowardtherearofanin-lineengineonvehicleswithrear-wheeldriveasshowninFig.6.3.1HowtoCheckAutomaticTransmissionFluidWheretofindthetransmissionfluiddipstickinaninlineengine6.3.1HowtoCheckAutomaticTransmissionFluidIfyourvehiclehasfront-wheeldrive,thetransmissionfluiddipstickisstickingoutofthetransaxle,asshownhere.Wheretofindthetransmissionfluiddipstickifyouhavefront-wheeldrivee6.3.1HowtoCheckAutomaticTransmissionFluidThefluidlevelinamanualtransmissionmustbecheckedwiththevehicleonahoist(舉起)toenablethetechniciantoreachapluginthebottomofthetransmission.Tocheckyourautomatictransmissionfluid,followthesesteps:Pulloutthedipstick.WiththegearshiftinNeutralorParkandtheparkingbrakeon,letyourenginerun.Besuretheengineiswarmwhenyoupulloutthedipstick.(Don’tturnofftheengine.)Checkthefluid.6.3.1HowtoCheckAutomaticTransmissionFluidDipthetipofyourindexfingerintothefluidonthedipstickandrubthefluidbetweenyourfingerandthetipofyourthumb.Thetransmissionfluidonthedipstickshouldbepinkishandalmostclear.Ifitlooksorsmellsburntorhasparticlesinit,haveamechanicdrainandchangethefluid.6.3.1HowtoCheckAutomaticTransmissionFluidWipethedipstickwithaclean,lint-free(不起毛的)rag(摸步);thenreinsertitandpullitoutagain.Ifthetransmissionfluidisclearbutdoesn’treachthe“Full”lineonthedipstick,useafunneltopourjustenoughtransmissionfluiddownthedipsticktubetoreachtheline.Don’toverfill.6.3.2ChangingATFIt'samessyjobbecausethere'snodrainplugtochangethefluid,butyoucandoityourselfifyou'resoinclined.Tochangethefluid,youhavetogetunderyourvehicleandremovethepanfromthebottomofthetransmission.6.3.2ChangingATFWhenyouloosenthepan,fluidwillstarttodribble(滴下)outinalldirectionssoyouneedafairlylargecatchpan.Youshouldalsoknowthatremovingthepandoesn'tdrainalloftheoldfluidoutofthetransmission.Approximatelyathirdoftheoldfluidwillstillbeinthetorqueconverter.There'snodrainplugontheconvertersoyou'rereallyonlydoingapartialfluidchange.Evenso,apartialfluidchangeisbetterthannofluidchangeatall.6.3.2ChangingATFAtypicalfluidchangewillrequireanywherefrom3to6quartsofATFdependingontheapplication,anewfilterandapangasket(orRTVsealer)forthetransmissionpan.Thepanmustbethoroughlycleanedpriortoreinstallation.Thisincludeswipingallfluidresiduefromtheinsideofthepanandscrapingalltracesoftheoldgasketfromthepan'ssealingsurface.Don'tforgettocleanthemountingflangeonthetransmission,too.6.3.2ChangingATFWhenthenewfilterisinstalled,besureitismountedintheexactsamepositionastheoriginalandthatanyO-ringsorothergasketshavebeenproperlypositionedpriortotighteningthebolts.Thentightentheboltstothemanufacturer‘srecommendedspecs(說明書).Whenrefillingthetransmissionwithfreshfluid,becarefulnottoallowanydirtordebris(顆粒)toenterthedipsticktube.Usingalong-neckfunnelwithabuilt-inscreenisrecommended.6.3.2ChangingATFCAUTION:Donotoverfillthetransmission.Toomuchfluidcancausethefluidtofoam,whichinturncanleadtoerraticshifting,oilstarvation(缺油)andtransmissiondamage.ToomuchfluidmayalsoforceATFtoleakpastthetransmissionseals.6.3.2ChangingATFAddhalfaquartatatimeuntilthedipstickshowsfull.Thetransmissionreallyisn'tfullyetbecausethedipstickshouldbecheckedwhenthefluidishot,andtheengineisidlingwiththegearselectorinPark.Sostarttheengine,drivethevehiclearoundtheblock,thenrecheckthefluidlevelwhiletheengineisidlingandaddfluidasneededuntilthedipstickreadsfull.Practice—MaintenanceManualReadingCheckingandtoppinguptheATF/ReplacingATFCheckingtheATFLevelPractice—MaintenanceManualReadingNOTE!Drivethevehiclesothattheengineandtransaxleareatnormaloperatingtemperature.Fluidtemperature:70–80°C(158–176°F)(a)Parkthevehicleonalevelsurfaceandsettheparkingbrake.(b)Withtheengineidlingandthebrakepedaldepressed,shifttheshiftleverintoallrangesfromPtoLpositionandreturntoPposition.(c)Pulloutthedipstickandwipeitclean.(d)Pushitbackfullyintothepipe.Practice—MaintenanceManualReading
